Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Heeeeeeere's Johnny! All together now: "How cold was it?"

I'll bet it was not 0F like it was here this morning. Nor will it be -3F like it will be here tomorrow morning. Put on a sweater

OK so what is the difference between recessive white and dominant white? If the bird is recessive white (meaning born of parents that carried only one white gene??) it has 2 white genes and can only pass on white genes. But apparently the bird will only "throw" white chicks 100% of the time if mated to another recessive white bird. If mated to a bird carrying 1 recessive white it will throw some whites based on the Punnett Square. So how do you get a dominant white bird??

Pretty impressive for a financial software developer turned manager Susan

No, It was not that cold!!! I would never live any place that is colder! My husband couldn't talk me into moving to a colder place. Not even if he built me 100 chicken pens and give me $ to buy any and all the chickens I wanted. I dress warm but I just can't get warm! I must have ice in my blood! Everyone else will be fine and I will be shivering! lol

So dominant white is only 'kinda' dominant given the black bits? But a bird with 1 black and one recessive white will be all black? I am so confused.
I copy is incompletely dominant or leaky . Dominant with 2 copies removes black very well but not so good at removing red . This is why it can turn Black breasted red to Red Pyle . Recessive is very good at removing red . Both have a place in chicken genetics . Ameraucana have been recessive white from the beginning .

I have some new babies. Pictures to follow soon. They are so cute. Thank you Samouw! Beautiful little chicks!

I am good thank you! You made me cry though but in a very good way. How sweet of you to remember my little hen..... she was my favorite. I have lost one chicken to a predator. It was her. I think of her a lot. Hope I have another little chatty hen in my new batch!

The little miracle babies!! Went missing for 51 hours in the USPS, didn't show up in the system until 10PM Wednesday night, and didn't get delivered until Thursday morning. They were shipped on Monday. It was a day of prayer, nail-biting, and lots of phone calls to every PO between Aiken SC and Pat's home!

But they made it! All alive and cheeping and very thirsty!

'The wheatens/blue wheatens that I kept out of this last hatch are very personable! I have one that comes running over and jumps up on my hand already. They are teaching the blacks to be more sociable. lol
