He's not a standard color, making him an Easter Egger. He's got black feathering, so no Blue/Black/Splash genes at all. He's too pale for Wheaten.

Yea, kinda what I figured too.dosnt match up to any splash Id ever seen but Im only a couple years into ameraucana so I thought Id ask.Came from good lines but ended up like this..

Susan, have you seen size to be any indication of sex in the AM chicks? This is my second hatch, and I find myself assigning personalities to them by size. Like you, my chicks with the biggest personalities are generally boys, but in these chicks the biggest ones with the fullest muffs have the most personality. The smaller ones with the not so puffy faces act more "henlike"; cuddly and not as rambunctious. That could be something as simple as some eggs were larger than others, or it could just be me assuming the larger ones are boys.
I'm really looking forward to watching these grow. Only 1 from the black rooster so far, but three more of his eggs are on day 20. I'm setting more of his as soon as this hatch is complete. My plan is to keep 8-10 from each pen to grow out, then start culling to my breeders for next year's flocks. That, to me, will be the first true generation of the "scflock" line

I have a "tank" from my test hatch that I'm hoping is a cockerel, but Redbanks has one just like him, that I'm pretty sure is a pullet, so....

I learned last year, with the blacks from Paul, to just wait til they crowed. lol

You can tell by combs, tail set, and legs a little earlier, but not much. At this point, I just hope the especially big ones are cockerels, though I was hoping to put some size on a couple of my hens, too.

Out of my EE chicks last Fall the 2 males would sit by themselves more whereas it seemed like the females stayed together more. I have one that prefers his own company. He even goes and sits back down in the very same spot! I bet this chick is a male, much more aloof.
At this point all of mine are too afraid to approach my hand. They all still shy away . Of course their only 6 to 7 days old yet.

Thanks! They are little cuties aren't they? And their so small still! My blue wheatens are the biggest. There is close to 24 hours hatch time on some I think but would that make that much difference in size? And I even have a lighter colored one in the bunch! Their irresistible!!

I have one black chick that is boy. It is one of the smaller chicks, nothing like our "tanks". It attacks my hand with outstretched wings, pecking and hopping up and down. I showed a friend. I stuck my hand in the pen and he attacked (it is the chick you said was a cockerel). I told her when I pick him up he is going to have a blue band on each leg. Of course, it was him. He is the only chick that attacks and it isn't about treats. This boy is full of himself. He is the line bred chick. I knew he was a cockerel at 5 days old.

I have looked awhile now trying to find the answer with no luck.
***My chicks crops feel very hard (like those little rubber balls out of the old dime store machines***
Do you guys know if this is normal?
They are about 6 days old.
What do you think?
