Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Oh, this sounds too typical. I hope the so-called ameraucana (leghorn) you got is at least a good layer!

I think I posted this on a different thread, but recently I saw an add on craigslist for araucana chickens. I checked it out. In the picture NONE of them were araucanas. I'm not sure what they were. Easter egger crosses of some kind, I suppose. I emailed the guy and tried to be as polite and diplomatic as I could. He wrote back that he was offended, that he had been raising them for 10 years, had won both the UGLIEST and PRETTIEST chicken classes at the fair (really? I didn't even know they had classes for that!) Anyway, I wrote back again apologizing and let him know that was not my intent. I sent him links to the araucana breeders website and to BYC. I got an email from him a couple of days ago accusing me of flagging his add to get it deleted.

HOWEVER-I did see a subsequent add from the same guy, this time not SELLING araucanas but instead looking to buy araucana hens.

Does anyone have Blue Wheaten Ameraucana chicks or hatching eggs for sale this time of year?

I have a few questions for the experts

I was doing some surfing on genetics and came across this on another web site, re: B/B/S -
My first question is, does this look right?

The following combinations are achievable:

Blue X Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black, 25% Splash
Blue X Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black
Blue X Splash = 50% Blue, 50% Splash

Black X Black = 100% Black
Splash X Splash = 100% Splash
Splash X Black = 100% Blue

Last year I got some really nice black hens from a black x white pairing. Is this common, or was it luck ? (the black came from lines where the shanks run black vs slate)

what would be a likely scenario hatching eggs from a splash X white ? (I'll probably try it anyway, tho)

The reason you got blacks from black x white is because the white was recessive. You either get whites or blacks, depending on the white being dominant or recessive. White x Splash in your case will throw 100% blues.

The BBS thing is right, yes.

Anything bred to splash will give you all blue, except splash of course. You might have some leakage of whatever color the white might be hiding. I hatched a bunch of EEs in the fall and several of the males had red showing through the blue.

HappyMtn,

That's not necessarily true on the splash breeding. We don't know what is under the white. It could be barred, buff, etc.

It's not a good idea to breed a black line using recessive white. It's ok to improve the whites using black but not the other way around.

Right- that's what I was saying. I bred splash to wild-type partridge and got a bunch of blue-coppery birds. The males were no where close to solid blue.

Also- I have bred splash over white cochins. The 2 females babies I kept were also blue copper.

Here's another example- this hen is the result of splash over columbian (white) :

It was really interesting- 1/2 of the females came out with gold leakage, the males all had silver leakage, and the other 1/2 of the girls are solid blue.

Hi,

I am about to re-home my Wheaton/Blue Wheaton Ameraucuna roo's. I hatched six of them. I think that four are roosters. They are about 3 months old and no one is crowing. Although, between them the ones that I think are roosters, seem to be getting darker combs. Only noticeable if you see one of the hens next to them.

Questions:

Is it safe to assume that the ones who are almost all black or black and gray are indeed roosters?

And

I have one that is mostly tan and just a little black on the tips of her wings, and a light comb. Hen?

Thanks!
