Wannabchick... nothing better than a pip... except a zip... and a chick! Yay!

Just finished our first hatch of lavs. Ended up with 7 lavs and 8 splits. They're adorable! I have more hatching next week.

The chicks look especially purple when they start getting their wing feathers in. I have seen some lav orps that almost look white, but not these guys. I have yet to see anybody elses lav Ams in person except for Crystalcreeks and they look just like mine.

To me they are silvery grey, but everyone sees things differently.

Do you have yellow feet on that little one? Maybe it's just the light?

After some research and questions on the breeder forum, it seems that a hen's diet can influence foot color for a awhile after hatch. My girls receive a lot of hay and I will see a yellow cast at hatch that fades to flesh color by 3 weeks of age. It is more obvious in the lavs than the B/Bs, as they seem to have less pigmented shanks/feet at hatch.

My lavs have pink toes at hatch, but I had some buffs hatch from shipped eggs last week and their legs almost look green

It would be interesting to find out more about the diet of those buffs. I would like to hear how they look in 3 weeks.

My birds get 14% grass hay with timothy, brome and orchard grass that I purchase for my horses.

At the moment (just a few days post-hatch), they have bluish green legs and pink toes.
