Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

feedstores get their chicks from hatcheries , and in which hatcheries list them as americanas/aracanas , when in fact they are easter eggers , they are listed this way since the hens will lay blue /green eggs and that is one of the traits associated with AMERAUCANAS , another is the muffs.... if you want actual pure ameraucanas and not EE , you need to check out some people on this thread who breed pure ameraucanas , the APA standard of perection recognizes 8 color variations for ameraucanas , you can find all the information about ameraucanas at www.ameraucana.org , you will also find a breeder directory list there as well as pictures of the listed varieties that are accepted by APA standards

Tractor Supply had a bin full of chicks with a sign that read "Americana". They were actually Welsummer chicks (did some research when I got home). I knew they couldn't be Ameraucana's but give me a break! Welsummers are very distinctive. Someone had already bought the whole bunch....there was a written paper in the bin with them that said 'all sold'. Wonder if the buyer knew what they were

Hi Illia..... How can you tell the difference? A friend got some at an auction and they look so much like my birds (bought from an Ameraucana breeder. I haven't been able to explain the difference to him because I don't know the difference!!

Thanks!

edited to add that I just found the post describing the difference...

I actually have more black/white EEs than I wanted...they seem to be more standoff-ish than the red/brown/partridge ones. My eyer prefers the more golden colors, I guess.

The "silvers" are striking in appearance, though.

My bad!!! I just saw a picture of Silver Ameraucana chicks on the auction thread. SOOOO, those chicks at TS could have been labeled correctly. Didn't know they could have the light beaks and legs....always learning!

some 4-5 day old chicks. I didnt take a lot of time, grabbed one of each that I have, and took a quick pic... left to right - Black, Buff, wheaten, Lavender.

Got my new GQF incubator and hatcher today!!!! I just have them out of the boxes and set up ready to go.

Now I will clean and sanitize the hatching room before moving anything in. Then I will transfer over the eggs and clean & sanitize the old ones so they can go off to their new homes.

Pictures to come when they are all set up.

NICE!!! I am so jealous.

I have one buff chick out, and a mess of wheatens from Denise (paradisefound) and Wayne Meredith. Still a lot more eggs that really need to hatch. Please hatch!!! All of my control eggs were out first.
