Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

One of my wheatie girls is the loudest of loud. She likes to make noise like she's in the jungle and wants everyone to know she's there!

On an awesome note, I saw my roo on top of one of my laying wheaten girls. Time to get out the incubator!

Go Geoffry III !!!!!!!!!!

(My blue Gene is not the most roosterly of roos although he does have a voice so he wouldn't work in Phoenix. He doesn't share treats nor does he protect anybody but himself or break up girl fights, however, I do seem to end up with fertile eggs so he's getting his primary job done .... )

I am considering getting one of the Ameraucanas, but need to know if they are generally quiet birds as I live close to neighbors. Do the girls sing loud "egg song" and do the roos crow a lot? Any info on this much appreciated!

Our Ameraucana rooster is quite the vocal fellow. I think that is typical of the breed. The hens were no louder than average with their egg song. However the rooster could knock the socks off any hen singing egg song along with her!

Okay- so jealous. Can anyone tell me what traits are sexlinked? Like egg color is from the male, etc? I think this means that certain traits can only be passed through the roos as the hens don't carry the appropriate amount of genes. I am hammering my way through some books but have to take it slow as I am getting very confused.
Also, can anyone recommend a "chicken calculator" that is like, Jr. High level? Sad commentary, I know.

thanks!

I do not know what all the sex-linked genes are but I do know that yellow leg color is. And according to Kenny Troiano in a Poultry Press article about 3 months ago (yes, I'm that far behind in my reading!), the sex-linked gene means that the male will pass the gene on to both his sons and daughters but the mother only passes the gene on to her sons.

God Bless,

I don't think gold or yellow legs are sex linked. Yellow legs is a recessive gene and requires 2 copies to express .... like wheaten and lavender.

Silver is sex linked I KNOW that. Barring, cuckoo is sex linked. Chocolate genes are sex linked too.

May not be exactly what you are looking for but it explains how to make SEX LINKS and you need to use genes that are sex linked to make them.

The epidermal layer (white vs. yellow) is not sex-linked

The dermal layer (Black vs. not black) is sex-linked.

Since hatching season is right around the corner, I will try this again.

I am in serious need of a SQ or very good BQ wheaten Ameraucana rooster.
I will drive up to 500 miles round trip for the right rooster.
If you are to far, I will pay for shipping.
I prefer Ribbick, Meredith , Blehm or Cree lineage.
No Peachick/Kat LaDue lineage.

My girls should start laying soon and I'd like to introduce the new rooster this month or early next month.

Thank you!
