Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you all for the current discussion. I am getting ready to start breeding chickens, and the discussions on breeding technique, problems that arise, time involved, are very helpful to me. I am starting with a color variety of four different breeds. Ameraucanas are the primary breed that I am interested in, but I can't make up my mind on a color variety. I started our wanting to do silvers (I think they are just breath taking), but after researching the variety on the ABC forum, I am not sure they are the best variety to start with for me. First, they seem to be very difficult to find and second, I think they are probably a bit too difficult for a beginner like me. Now I am researching wheatens. I had a five year program for breeding, but it is constantly being updated based on information I gather and the fact that my living situation may change which would allow for a more aggressive approach. Anyhow, I am in a planning phase and appreciate all the information. I do tend to ramble sometimes.

Lilwanis,
You can also go to the Ameraucana Breeders Club forum and do some research. You can read all the post but I think you may need to be a member to login. There is a lot of information not as much socilization as on here.

Oh, yes, I have been reading the discussions there. Very interesting and very over my head sometimes. I read the forum with a dictionary, google, and chicken genetics websites up so that I can interpret every other sentence

Joking a little, but I have been reading a lot there. I keep wondering if I should join the club, or wait until I am an actual breeder to do so (or even until I have actual ameracaunas, lol). I tend to research a lot before I take action on anything.

bruceha2000,
Sorry just about everything has been culled especially the lavender ameraucanas. It would cost to ship more than the birds are even worth.

Bummer. And you aren't even 17 gallons of gas away round trip! We need a chicken express. "Chicken people" must be driving all over the country all the time. Just need some way to connect those going one direction with others going from "there" on farther, and so on. What's a couple of pullets along with the rest of the stuff one is carrying?

Heck, there's a guy on another thread from Pittsburgh who is coming all the way to northern Vermont in March. He'd practically have to drive right past your house! Of course, he might be flying, he just asked for info since he saw I'm from Vermont, it isn't like we are great friends.

Single muff and beard can be an issue also. Sometimes, you can't tell a bird has it. Generally a bird with the single muff and beard gene has very small muffs and beards and sometimes not. There is no way to tell on some of them that they have it until you breed the birds. By then it's too late. You have to cull the sire and then weed through the females using a clean faced sire. It is time consuming and you can loose the better part of a year of breeding.

Definitely NOT an issue with the B/B/S I got from you, Jean. My blues from you have enough beard and muffs to supply three birds!!!

(And they are passing it on .... )
