Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Wow those are some GORGEOUS birds. Good luck on your search for Silvers- I hear they are quite rare, especially good ones. Beautiful!

Rinda

Thanks Rinda!
With a little luck, my cousin may have found some Silvers in Maine! She is checking into it a little more before I make contact. This person she met only uses the phone, no email etc... I'm soooo very curious to know more! She also has some Wheatens, which is what my other roo is.
Thank John for breeding beautiful birds! I am blessed to have them in my care. Sir Silver is not too happy with me right now, he's used to free ranging and is now penned with his two Ladies. He doesn't understand why poor baby!
It will be an interesting year!

Got my first chicks yesterday 2 are ameraucanas. Didn´t know that they could be so big. All 4 birds I got were suppose to be 3 weeks old but the Ameraucanas are much heavier than the other 2 birds. One is a Buff Orphington and the other is an Australop (sp?). Is this normal?

If you purchased them from a feed store or hatchery they are called Easter Eggers on BYC. Americauna are a hybrid created by hatcheries to sell the blue egg laying chickens, they are a hybrid of several different breeds and are not purebred. They use the Americauna, Ameraucana or Auracana name because it sells the chicks. All mine have been big healthy chicks, and have grown up to be multiple colored chickens. Please join us on the thread created to celebrate them: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/273489/the-ee-braggers-thread

If you do make contact I would be interested in Wheatens. I am having the hardest time finding good pure Wheatens. Everyone I see pictures of look more like Blue Wheaten or works in progress. Most are missing the black marks in the tail. I would be interested in BW too, but really would like to find 2-3 Wheaten hens.

My Paul smith chicks are coming tomorrow. Eeeeeeek!!! So excited! Hope they all have a good trip. Getting bbs and lav.

I can't wait for mine! I was told April for my wheatens. I am dying with anticipation!

.............. I just realized that I may want to build a new brooder. I am actually going to be over run with chicks this year.

I wish I would've ordered wheatens too. I know his son has had great success showing his wheatens. It's frustrating when you are serious about learning to be a "real breeder" but some of the best stock is being kept by those breeders and only offered to their buddies. It creates a catch 22. Those people complain of all the sub quality birds out there but don't do much to get birds and teaching out there when people ask for it. I can see why the problem of Easter eggers and poor quality persists. I'm so happy with Paul and Angela and how personable they are. I would highly recommend them to anyone wanting to learn and start with a good foundation. Don't get me wrong. There are plenty of other good folks out there obviously. I've just had a great experience with them and wanted to mention it.

Good Morning, pips&peeps

I am new to your thread, and delighted about the chance to learn about these lovely, amusing birds, and hopefully be able to find a reputable breeder to purchase 3-4 true/purebred Ameraucanas, from. I am in total confusion as to what is an Easter Egger, and what qualifies a bird as an Ameraucana? I did read number of posts in different threads, where they are discussing brown egg laying Ameraucanas. I thought one of the distinguishing qualities of Ameraucana birds is their ability to lay blue eggs.

I would appreciate if you please elaborate the differences of conformation between the two breeds. I've asked number of chicken breeders the same question, and received different answers. Popular reply has been: " There is no difference; if they have ABC., accepted colors, they are Ameraucana, and if they are any other color, they are EE. I am having difficulty understanding how they can be classified as different breeds if they are the progeny of the same parents?

I feel fortunate to be able ask this very perplexing question to the President of ABC.

Thank you!
Lual

I questioned this very thing a few pages back on this thread. I received a lot of comments on the matter. Basically, anything that doesn't conform to the standard of perfection regardless of parentage is considered an EE. It still doesn't make sense to me, but that is the SOP for Ameraucanas. My questioning of the SOP was not well received by other subscribers on this thread. It seems even breeders of Ameraucanas are having trouble agreeing on this subject. They told me at the end of the day you can call your birds whatever you want, but this is not the forum to discuss such things. I know there are other threads out there in which you can discuss this matter in greater detail. There are some project threads for Ameraucanas and numerous EE threads. One of the most popular is this one :

Or you can just read a few pages further back on the thread. I think they prefer to discuss genetics and breeding of Ameraucanas that meet the SOP not the SOP itself. It was all rather confusing for me too. I highly recommend asking this question on a different thread. I didn't have time to read the entire thread but I guess this question comes up a lot.
