you are so correct. I had 2 black and a blue ameraucana. 1 rooster was apparent quickly. I thought I was lucky but the other black one showed the manly side after he was a few months old. When they crow or lay eggsnot an easy task with pure Ameraucanas.![]()

The tail feather method should worh at 4 weeks.Hens should have longer tailfeathers. My chicks are 4 wks old. How can u tell the males from the females?
Quote:I was just talking to a breeder (produces 1000+ a year) that said you can sex them as day olds by feather and combs; boys have no feathers on the outer portion of the wing and 3 rows of "peas" on their combs vs. just a single for girls. He told me he has nearly 90% accuracy doing this. This is a good friend who has been raising them for a long time (as well as Turkens) and I do trust what he says. He said he will send pictures upon hatch to show me, which I will share here.... oh and his birds are from Smith lines.

Yes that can be used IF and ONLY IF you breed for it. If you are breeding for that I THINK you would use a Slow feathering Rooster over fast feathering hens/pullets. The slow feathering is passed down to the cockerels from the rooster and that would give you the feather sexing.
I would think most good breeders breed AWAY from that trait. I do in my Ameraucanas and my Marans. Some breeds need to be slow feathering like my GSBR and SLW. Both of those REQUIRE the Slow feathering gene to create the nice lacing and barring.
Oh yeah.... feather sexing only will work the first few days after that you can't use it.
