Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Is chipmunk coloring indicative of the Ameraucana breed?

The chipmunk colored chick down is indicative of the color base. There are many many many different breeds that have chipmunk colored chicks. Since I am researching them right now Speckled Sussex comes to mind. So do Partridge colored Silkies. Ameraucanas only have one color that has chipmunk striped chicks, that is Silver. It is not a common color and is not available from Hatcheries or feed stores.

If you are seeing chipmunk striped chicks called Americaunas, Auracanas or Ameraucanas - they are called Easter Eggers on this site and on the ABC site. They are not Ameraucanas and cannot be shown at poultry shows as Ameraucanas. You can find out more about them over here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/273489/the-ee-braggers-thread/11410#post_11294084

Maybe you could give me some idea about this little one. I bought her from a breeder who claimed she was an Ameraucana.

What color did the breeder tell you it was? Ameraucanas come in 8 recognized colors and a few project colors - that's it. If they are breeding true Ameraucanas they should tell you the color, and who their lines come from (the "strain" as it was). If they do not have that information, it is very doubtful that they are actually breeding Ameraucanas... sorry.

Some Breeders are confused by the feed stores and hatcheries that sell Easter Eggers as Ameraucanas/Auracanas/Americaunas. They were told it was an Ameraucana - and some get very upset to learn they are not... some even refuse to believe what they are told when they come on here.

If they didn't tell you what color your Ameraucana is - chances are it is not an Ameraucana.

Another red flag is green legs/yellow skin. While some Ameraucanas have that when they are babies, it does not ever show up in the adults. Did you get to see the parents? If you go to the ABC website and look at the different colors - did they look like any of those? Please note - mixing purebred Ameraucana colors is creating Easter Eggers too...

so if ameraucana's aren't supposed to have green legs, how come all the pictures i've seen posted of adults, and prize winning adults, have green/blue legs?
