Thank you so much! I am going to book mark all of them and read them. If you ever come across anything else i would love to read them too. Everytime I google chicken culling information the only thing that comes up is people culling for egg laying and people butchering their chickens.

The guides have been written a long time ago and some of them are outdated. The information is good. Some of those old timers methods work well today too.

I have thousands of links and bits of information about chickens and breeding..culling..health...etc
you may regret asking..lol

I really liked the article about line breeding. Very easy to understand. That was a good video too. I have been to some shows. i also try to attend workshops, most of which have had some very experienced breeders speak. I went to the central indiana poultry show in lebanon lat year and I loved it. I also went to a workshop a few days after new years at the same place. I like to go to them. I try to go to as many as I can expecially the ones in lebanon, but that is an 1 1/2 -2- maybe 2 1/2(if I get sidetracked) hour drive.

lol

side tracked as far as ..shopping? chicken talk?
What do you like about the workshops?

I love going too..Wisconsin does not have many shows. I make the local ones. I did not go to the one in Milwaukee. I was entered and would not bring my birds out in the heat. I also had a health scare the last time I took my birds off my property. Some became ill and it really frightened me. Now I am using every excuse not to go. I need to at least go. I should have gone to Milwaukee and left the birds at home.

Usually chicken talk. And I always have to stop at waffle house and eat, I love to eat there and I dont have one close to where i live lol. Last time as I was on the way to a workshop There was a semi full of chickens in the waffle house parking lot, I thought it was pretty irionic. I like to hear people talk about chickens. When i went in january there was a guy talking about a bunch of different breeds. although I am not interested in all differnt breeds it is still interesting to listen to all the things he had to say about them. A lot of the people there have 10,20,30,40+ years of expereience. I get into a lot of side conversations though and spend most of my time talking. there is a guy there (dont remember his name) that remembers me everytime he see me and I usually spend a good 30+ minutes talking to him. Also at the workshops they usually have some chickens for sale. I wish I would of got their earlier last year because there was a beautiful trio of light brahmas. I dont really raise brahmas but ouldnt of minded having them. I have a large coop that I have severeal different breeds thrown in together that I will show and have just for fun. then I have the ones I want to breed seperate. I ended up coming home with a bantam RIR cockerel last year. I dont even really like RIRs that much but he was such a sweetheart and bantams are cute. I would of just showed him. Indiana dosent have many shows either. The only one I will always go to is the one is lebanon I was talking about. Most of the other show are to far away from me. I am kind of in the upper right part of indiana and most of the shows end up being in the bottom of indiana. It would scare me to for my birds around ill birds, but I would think they would of took care of the situation pretty quickly. Even if I dont have any chickens I want to enter I still like to go to the shows.

Do you like to read books?

If you do there is a book called

The Art of Poultry Breeding

Written by Davis I think. It is old as dirt and has great info too.

Derry has a book out too..I think the title is something about the Science of breeding poultry. I do not have that book and was going to try to find it.

It sounds like you have a ton of fun..

I enjoy reading. But I always have the hardest time finding books that interest me, because I dont have a certain type of books I like just ones here and there. But a chickens book, I would read that. I might see if my library has it, I know they have some books about chickens. they had a couple of copies of the SOP which suprised me.. I always enjoy going to shows and socializing with people. You can hear a lot of great stories and learn a lot of things.I will try and find those books somewhere.Maybe I can find it online somewhere. I do try and have fun at the shows, but when it is time to judge I become all serious and nervous. Last year I got BV on a Blue Ameraucana pullet I no longer have.

Hi everyone! My daughter and I have been raising and showing chickens for 3 years now, and I finally settled down on a breed. I purchased a nearby entire flock of black Ameraucanas (love my blue hen I've had for years!) and am going to take the plunge into breeding (only purchased birds before this). I'm starting from a pretty good place - 3 hens, 4 promising pullets, 1 cock, 1 great-looking cockerel (and 4 bound for freezer-camp cockerels), and about 40-odd chicks in the growing out phase. Several of the older birds have won Grand or Reserve AOSB in previous years. My roo's carriage is a bit too upright, but the new cockerel is looking better in that respect. Evidently someone in the flock is throwing a cuckoo gene around, but I'm not sure who. Will try to cull for color, after type.

Just thought I'd introduce myself, and subscribe to the thread. My goal is to cull down to 2 or 3 trios, overwinter with a small number, and start with one hatch a year (probably December?), growing out the chicks through summer and fall. I've got 2 generations now, so will go mother/son or father/daughter for my first try this winter, right?

I am looking for some good basic breeding information. Does anyone have a book or website(s) that they can recommend for the first-time serious breeder? I live in an urban area, so are only allowed 6 hens (I may stretch that number at times), but luckily have friends & family willing to host my roos and chicks. I just don't have a lot of wiggle room (can't breed like crazy) so I want to be sure I'm doing it smart.

Thanks in advance!

Angela
Get a good incubator. This was the best thing Have done. You want to make sure you can hatch your eggs so you can grow out more birds and see what to keep for future breeding

I need this one

Your gray (blue) one looks so much like my gray hen. I've always wondered what she is and never found a picture that quite matches her. She was a rescue hen and the people we got her from didn't know what breed she was either. I will try to get a picture of her posted today and see what responses I get as to what breed people think she is. Excited to be close to finding out!
