My girl went broody after her friend was killed, we have put several of her eggs in the incubator because of his amazing coloring. That being said she started stealing eggs from my Dom girls, we allowed her to keep a few thinking out would help cheer her up from losing her friend. Everything was fine until this morning. I noticed one of the eggs was missing and she was walking around sneezing and making whining noises. She has gone back to her nest to sit on the other eggs, but I was just wondering if this is something I need to be worried about. We are new to chickens and they are our babies. It would treat my husband up if something happened to her, and yes she is a black am hen.

Broodies have a very interesting way of coming off the nest and getting food and water (and sometimes a quick dustbath) and dump (ewww). I haven't heard it called sneezing or whining though.. its more like clucking and growling and running around all fluffed up and chasing off anybody who gets too close. Sometimes they will eat an egg they know is no good, and sometimes one will get damaged if another hen is allowed to get on her nest to lay and any damaged eggs get eaten. There is a great (but VERY long) thread on BYC about broodies .https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...-and-informational-thread/19310#post_12089840 If you have lots of time you can start at the beginning and lean all sorts of stuff about them.

Thanks so much. She would act like that until today, but she wouldn't eat much. More she almost acts like she has a cold or allergies and she won't lay on the other eggs. I don't care about them, we were just trying to pull her out of her gloom from her guy being killed. I just want her better. She's my one who is real lovey and sweet, at least more so than the rest. Thanks so much for the help.

They can get bronchial infections from fungus or mold and they can get lung irritations from dust or stuff like that. There are also some diseases that can cause coughing and wheezing but I hope she doesn't have any of those. They also don't really grieve like we do - but if you only had two birds or they were a pair she will be lonely for awhile. You can try Oxine in a mister to get inside her throat and lungs to try and get the infection cleared up for her.

That's what I did last year with my d'uccles, at Ohio National Poultry show, just experience and walked home with champion d'uccle BB BV 1st Mille Fleur hen and BV mottled cockerel, 3 RV mottled pullet, 4 Mille Fleur pullet, wasn't expecting that. Now I'm hooked but not expecting, it is fun. I plan on taking a Black AM pullet and 2 wheaten pullets along with the d'Uccles
