Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

This is the same standard as almost all breeds in the American Standard of Perfection. There are only 1-2 kinds of poultry where splash is an accepted color and splash variety birds must be shown as AOV.

Seems to be a double standard. I mean by definition Splash breeds true, moreso than blue does and yet Blue is an accepted color and Splash is not. Go Figure.

It is just the way it is. There are other animals where that kind of double standard exists. Shetland Sheepdogs come in three colors, black, blue and sable (with or without tan on all three colors) with white of less than 50% of their body. Breed a perfectly correct blue merle to another blue merle and 25% of the offspring will be white and will be disqualified. They are still Shelties, but they have a disqualifying fault. The fault is just an expression of a double copy of the merle gene.

But since the Splash is used back into breeding for the blue why not just give it sanction? What is the big deal anyway? It is not like it is an introduced color of project birds that has been worked in.

I can't speak for those who put the original Ameraucana standard together, but bottom line, it just is. I think some breeders are working to have splash recognized as an acceptable color, but there are procedures that have to be followed to get the standard changed.

Many breeders are working on getting the color accepted. It will take awhile, it is a long process to go through.

I take splashes along with my blacks to all of the shows I go to and honestly, they get the most oohs and aaahs from the general public.
Ya, they do get attnetion for sure. I like to stand around and see people reactions (not just to my chickens and breeds I have but others too). Some of them crack me up. I have had multiple ask me if my roosters are mean as I am reaching into a hen/pullets cage. So I say I don't keep aggressive cockerels/rooster. What breed were you talking about specifically? And they point to the cage I just had my hand in. Well, umm thats not a rooster.

I would like to take a moment to thank everyone for your imput. Sorry about the picture thing, my phone is low on space so it loops me back. It does the same on FB. I did manage a picture of him as my avatar. Maybe that will help. Again thanks for taking time
to help.

Just wanted to post a couple of pics of some interesting splash cockerels I hatched from BBS parents. I freaked a bit when I first noticed the deep red coloring on their wings, as it looks very much like blood. The red feathers are only on the wings, and only on the two cockerel. The one BBS pullet from the same hatch is marked exactly as the parents... no red feathers. Parents in the pic above.

Left foreground in this pic is the BBS pullet.
