Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Those birds are white. Yes the first looks like a cockerel and the second a pullet.
Thank you for the reassurance regarding the second being a pullet!

If you look carefully you'll see some grey/black markings on the white. I thought that made them splash. Showing ignorance here regarding BBS. I thought any tone with markings in the blue/white shades were considered splash.

I have a beautiful solid white Ameraucana. She's lovely. She was from another BBS breeder across the country. Is white commonly thrown with BBS stock?

Another question regarding BBS stock. I'm trying to pick a cockerel.

For color purposes, which is the best? Blue, Black or splash? I think I have a lovely blue cockerel. I know that I have a splash and a black.

Here are some of the blue pullets. Bad photos of the birds for sexing but I wanted to show the lacing. These are shaping up to be very nice birds.

This one is actually a blue splash. Her markings are not from blue kote.

The bottom one here isn't getting much of a muff. I think she'll be going away.

A very dark blue, it's bright outside but she is almost slate grey. Lovely muff coming in on her.

The lacing on this one is quite pretty. I'd have a whole flock like this!

They are splash. It is my understanding if you breed splash to splash for several generations you get birds that are almost all white. Breeding back to blue gives you splashes with more color. They may look white but the genetics behave like a splash when bred to blues or blacks.

Who did you get them from? What color cock bird was in the pen?

No, white should not be in the black/ blue pen. You can use black to improve your whites but usually not the other way around.

The eyes on the birds look really light too. What do the legs look like on the female?

Also, this bird is not splash it is blue:

That is an amazing blue.
Yes it sure is!! Unfortunately, that was the only really blue egg she laid!

That can be partly diet from what I have been researching. If you feed her more like you would feed a jungle fowl you may get a return of the deeper shades.

What do you feed to get the blue pigment back? My lavender Ameraucana, who had quite a dark blue egg to begin with, laid a lot of eggs and ended up with an egg that was so pale it was almost white. She's broody now, so maybe when she goes back to laying eggs, I'll have one that has some color in it. Here's a picture of her first egg:
