Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

One more time for slow thinkers like me....

Feather sexing: Which has the longest feathers? (Please let it be the pullets!)

Three of my seven chicks that hatched Saturday have wing feathers that are quite a bit longer than the other four. Two of those three are the only splashes hatched and I was hoping for splashes.

The father of these chicks is a bird that has been aggressive to people since he was quite young (as a newbie, I just didn't recognize it), so I do not think I should keep any of the cockerels from this breeding regardless of their quality. The father is a fabulous rooster for the free ranging flock--very good with the hens and very protective--but he is getting dangerous and needs to be culled. I'm just waiting until some of the other cockerels are a bit older and can start being watchful and protective. Thoughts on people aggression in LF Ameraucana roosters?

Thanks.

Quote: You CAN NOT FEATHER SEX Chickens UNLESS you breed them that way! Vent sexing would be the only way to sex them unless it was a sexlink cross, autosexing breed.

I don't remember the combo but you have to have a slow feathering bird x with a fast feathering bird. I don't keep slow feathering birds in my flock unless they are patterned birds.

Are they maybe asking about how you can sometimes tell male from female because one grows feather faster. I know most people mention feather sexing and think checking feather on newly hatched but some people think you can get a pretty accurate guess at a week or so old from the size of the tail and wing feathers.

Yes--I was just hoping that the longer, more developed wing feathers would be suggestive the chick was a pullet. Three of my chicks all hatched a week ago have much further developed wing feathers than the other four. Two of those faster feathering chicks happen to be the color I desperately want.

Hi, I am hoping that someone may be able to help me identify one of my hens. I was sold her believing she was a lavender araucana but since learnt probably not. She lays small turquoise eggs, has a pea comb and I've been told she may be an Ameraucana?

Here is a picture of her, I live in Australia and don't see many of these birds around.

Thanks.

I'm quite new to this breed, but from your picks she looks clean faced. No muff or beard. If that's the case she is probably an Easter Egger, which is a non standard or mixed breed ameraucana.

Can you get closer pics of her comb and beard?

Edit-- I can see some beard but I'm still not really sure. Anyone else know?
