Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

How do you know if they are pure? The lady I bought them from has show birds. She breeds them and blue splash marans. All her birds were separated. They all have the slate b lueish legs. Is there any other way to tell? I know three may be roos. The two grey ones and the one with all of black. Only because of the three row comb. Does that mean for sure they are boys?
Just look at the ABC website, MrsBachbach's birds and my birds and you will see what true Ameraucanas should look like. Slate legs and blue layers do not make a true Ameraucana.

O

So wheaten and blue wheaten will create EE ? I have so much to learn.... How do you all figure out which are best for breeding?
No, that color combo does not produce EEs. You will get 50% wheaten and 50% blue wheaten with that cross. It is when you start crossing other genetically incompatible colors, such as buff, silver, solid blue, etc. together that the colors don't breed true and you are basically creating non standard Ameraucanas, considered EEs.

Wheaten x wheaten= 100% wheaten
Wheaten x blue wheaten= 50% wheaten, 50% blue wheaten
Blue wheaten x blue wheaten = 50% blue wheaten, 25% wheaten, 25% splash wheaten.
Wheaten x splash wheaten = 100% blue wheaten

first, thank you so much for your help and info!
She did have wheaten and blue wheaten. They were all separated in different pens with a couple hens with a roo. I was thinking maybe one of each soul make the funny colors?
Do EE's have the slate legs?
So if a wheaten and a blue wheaten mix its not a pure AM?

Oh no, that's not what I meant. I mean a blue ameraucana, not a blue wheaten. Blues and blue wheatens are from a different color group. You most certainly can breed blue wheaten to wheaten, just as you can breed blue to black. When it comes to ameraucanas those are the two color groups that you can breed amongst themselves. As far as the other colors such as silver, buff, white, and brown/red you do not want to mix those colors. They will not breed true. I have had people ask me if they could breed a blue to their wheaten to get blue wheaten. That's something you wouldn't want to do as they will not breed true.
I would think EE's could have slate legs. Would depend on what they were mixed with. Most have the willow or green looking legs though.

I'm looking for some blue and splash Ameraucana. I will buy any age but would rather have some pullets that just started Laying or almost gonna lay in a few weeks or something, I'm trying to get my breeding pen going right now I only have a pair I want to expand!

There is a seller in a Dayton Ohio. He is listed in the Ameraucana Breeders Club web page.

So I am building some new breeding pens (5 of them). I was thinking and I think I might just use 3 of the pens for Ameraucanas. 1 pen for blue x blue, 1 for black x black, 1 for splash x splash. Anybody see any reason this would be a bad idea? I might just h e to build some more pens. Two isn't enough for my other breeds! I should have planned on building 10 in the first place.

Help me understand the reason for this particular separation. This is for my education as I have my first Ameraucana flock. My understanding is :

Black X Black = Black
Black @ Blue = 50% Black 50% Blue
Blue X Blue = 25% Black 50% Blue 25% Splash
Splash X Splash = 100% Splash
Splash X Blue = 50% splash 50% Blue
Splash X Black = 100% Blue

I have all these colors plus the Blue Wheaten and Lavender which I know I must keep separate. I have also seen a comment where black need not be bred with blue but I do not understand why you would separate splash, unless of course that is exactly what you want. You will get them with the Blue X Blue as well.
