Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Chickens can be SUPER tame!

Here are some examples of our past chickens that have been really friendly/tame, without being forced into it.

Okay, well this may have been a little forced haha

Ending with a Bantam Splash Ameraucana named Dovely
That is so amazing, thank you for sending.

Sexing help please. I don't know why I can't sex my own chicks--I think it is denial.

There is the first three, all splash. The first bird is the youngest chick by 5 days. She'll (oh, please be a she!) be 15 weeks on Thursday. It was hot when I photographed them, maybe 90F.

Splash #1:

Splash #1 just always looked and acted like a pullet. Her tail looks more "pullet-ish." She has what looks like a single row of peas on the comb. He legs don't seem very big and she is the bigggest of the bunch even though she if five days younger than everyone else. I haven't noticed any of the splash having pink in their combs until today.

Splash #2:

This chick is 5 days older than the first chick. I don't notice big legs and the comb has always been very pale. It seems to have darker head/neck feathers which isn't thrilling me. I have yet to find any pointed feathers on the saddle or neck. This one and/or the splash following have that cockerel way about them--they look you right in the face and will jump up if they think I might have a treat. The first chick is much shyer. The tail feathers in the middle of the tail are still blood feathers, making me fear they are sickle feathers just coming in. I'm having my doubts about this bird and the next.

Splash #3:

I'm having a bad feeling about this chick. There seems to be three rows of peas at the back. Up until today, I would have said their combs were very pale and any development seemed to be one small row of peas. This bird will be 16 weeks on Saturday. I don't get the impression of cockerel legs, but I am a little suspect on the neck feathers of the last two especially.

Pictures of five blues to follow.
Are they pullets or cockerels? Thanks.

All these blues are the same age as the last two splash--16 weeks on Saturday.

Blue #1:

I had thought pullet, but look at that--three pale rows of peas. I hadn't noticed before. I'll have to take a close look at the saddle and hackle feathers. The obvious boys below are already showing pointy feather, but I don't know if I even checked on this bird so sure I was that it was a pullet. The pointy feathers are obvious in a blue because they are pretty much black. In a splash it isn't so obvious so soon.

Blue #2: Cockerel

Blue #3: Cockerel

Blue #4: Cockerel

Blue #5: Pullet

Do you think the first blue is a pullet or a cockerel. I'll be very disappointed if all my splash turn out to be cockerels.

Thoughts please. Thanks.

Wish we could see a body shot as well. I will go out on a limb and say I think they are all pullets. My splash all had pinker combs than my blacks/blues/lav/wheaten. I kept watching one that was larger thinking it might be a roo, but they were all girls. I only have two left and they are now 24 wks.and definitely girls.

All my blue boys had the black coloring, especially on the wings so I could easily tell which were boys and which were girls. It would definitely help to see full body shots on these. I am thinking there is a chance that the last one is a girl.

I'll get more pictures tomorrow.

My P.Smith chicks are a week old. If I go by who get's a tail first, I have 9 pullets and 6 roos.

Above is the boy pile. The yellow one is questionable, but it was not as pronounced as my girl pile.

This is the pile I called the girls group, but maybe it is just the chicks that got their tails first.

I like these odds as there are 6 in the no tail and 9 in the tail first pile. I'm a little unhappy that there are 3 out of my 5 blues with no tails and the prettiest lavender. But who knows what they will be in 2-3 months.

This will be my last update on how my prediction of my Ameraucana flock actually turned out In the top picture, I actually picked out 3 blues, a lavender, a wheaten and although you can not see, it I picked out a black, all of which I identified with no tail feathers at a week old thereby they were cockerels. The ones in the second picture were the girls, and you can see little tails.

At 24 wks old, I have FIVE cockerels consisting of 3 blue, a lavender, a "blue wheaten" , but alas, no black. Either there is something to this method, or I am awfully intuitive(which I am) or lucky,. That is an 83.3% successful prediction rate. I will try this again with my late winter/spring hatch and actually put bands on them next year to see if this method continues its winning streak.
