Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I know that grey is blue, but in comparing her to the two gray birds, I think she is really a black. The splash is very light, mostly white with a few black feathers. The other two are blue, one darker and one with a bit of black splashed in. Whatever colors they really all are though, they are turning out to be very pretty birds. In the pics below, the top one is the "black" with the lighter blue bird. All four amercaunas are in the middle picture with the splash in between the two blues and the darkest one off to the side.

Here is my dark bird, Sarah, who I think is a black.
I agree, they are blue.

Hi, can anyone help me identify this young chicken of mine? I think I may have an Ameraucana and hopefully a girl. I live in Australia and there is not much information on these birds down under!

Thanks everyone.

maybe a Australian Araucana ? Ive seen pictures and they look like Ameraucana somewhat I think they have crests too but as in other breeds not all the birds would.
@cjpines you should get on the Northern California thread too since your in Placerville. I am too Southeast past Pleasant Valley

My little 5 month Ameraucana is just now recovering from a dog attack which happened last Monday. No real physical damage was done, but I think she was in shock for several days. She still hasn't made a sound. Now she has come out of her kennel and is eating again. But during her days in isolation she was having diarrhea so her bottom feathers are hard and dirty. These are my first chickens. What is the best was to clean her vent area and the surrounding feathers to get rid of the dirt and smell?

If you want to save the feathers continuously run warm water so it loosens up and keep trying to break up the clumps and wipe off the access. When the bulk of it is off you can use dawn dish soap to help with the rest.

The post above gives you some good advice on how to wash a dirty, crusty butt. You can just cut everything off close to the vent. I would add that unless you are sure the chicken is 100%, I would leave her alone as long as their is an opening for any poop to get out. They can have damage and broken bones that they hide very well. The fact she was in shock and not herself for several days suggests a bit more happened than is visible. A friend of mine who is an avian vet told me not to feed them after something like this as they get a bit shocky and the gut shuts down. You can get all kinds of problems that can be life threatening when you add food to a gut that isn't working.

Thanks for the advice. I gave her a warm bath and used dawn to remove the crusty poop. She had stopped eating on her own until yesterday when she took a few bites of yogurt. Also yesterday she came into the run and had a little to drink. It's true that she could be hiding something. For now I am keeping her in a dog crate that I move from the coop to the run as long as it is warm enough. She actually "talked" a little in her bath. Thanks again.

I just made it home from Lucasville Ohio where nationals took place this year. There were probably over 100 ameraucanas being shown in total. I met some great people and brought home some nice birds. If anyone else here gets a chance to attend nationals next year I encourage you to do so. I didn't show any birds, but it was worth the time to see some of the top breeder's birds. The number of birds at Lucasville was down from several years ago but the large number of ameraucanas made up for it!

Goingquakers - 9 weeks is still young. The nice thing about blues is that cockerals darken were pullets do not - keep watching for the wings to either darker or not - good luck!

Thank you, this bird will drive me bonkers. I did get pics of the one i know is a cockerel.. i had black, splash and blue eggs under my hen...

The little I learned about the differences between birds here in the states and in Australia, I learned on the Facebook page "poultry colours and genetics" - I believe someone from down under posted photos of their beautiful birds this summer there. I think they mentioned very strict poultry importation restrictions.
