Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I talked with the person I got her from & he says he got the Ameraucana parents from a top breeder so I'm wondering what it is that says EE - not being smart just trying to learn. Why do you say roo - it has the single row comb not all 3 like a roo. Should I get a better shot of the comb? Thanks

A better picture of the comb would help. Your bird, although quite an interesting color, is not a recognized variety (color/feather pattern). Your bird looks like it has silver lacing and something else to give the barring. To be an Ameraucana, it has to be one of the recognized varieties. Ameraucanas don't come in the laced varieties nor anything that is barred. Also, the bird has yellow skin since its legs are green. White skin would show up as slate, not green.

Sorry. I am always a bit sad when so many people come to this thread to be disappointed. I think most of us feel your disappointment.

I'm not the expert on sexing that Pips'n Peeps is. I hope for your sake that she is wrong. I do have a silver laced Polish hen that had long pointed saddle feathers as a young bird like yours. She still turned out to be a pullet, so I hope yours does too.

The skin is not white if the legs are green.

I just looked again & the skin looks white to me - again, not being smart. But I take it the bottom of the feet shouldn't be yellow & they are.

Here's a better picture of the comb.

Ok thanks you guys. I guess I'm just gonna give up on getting an Ameraucana - I'm tired of people swearing they're Ameraucana & pullets. I now have 5 EE's & have had to get rid of 3 others that ended up being roos. I get too attached to them for one thing & hate giving them up. I'm thinking there are no honest people left!

That's really too bad that you were duped. I know how disappointing that can be because it has happened to me too. However, I do believe that there are still honest people out there. I'd like to suggest this web site as a place where you may be able to find a true Ameraucana: http://www.ameraucana.org/BreedersDirectory.htm. Perhaps if you get in touch with the person listed as director in your district (http://www.ameraucana.org/abcboard.html); they may be able to redirect you to a reputable breeder in your area.

Thanks, I'll check it out & keep it in mind but right now I've about got as many chickens as I have space for. Plus there are other breeds I'd like to get. I've been trying to get one that lays a blue egg so will just wait to see if one of my EEs pays her rent in blue! LOL. 2 of the 5 are laying - so far light green from 1 & a darker green from the other.

It really bothers me to read your email. You're not alone in your experiences.

Don't give up on the breed.

There are lots and lots of honest people in the world. A lot of the problem you are facing is because people truly believe their birds are Ameraucanas when they are not. If you hadn't shown this group pictures of your birds, would you not have truly believed that they were purebred Ameraucanas?

Go to the Ameraucana Breeders Club website: http://www.ameraucana.org/

Right on the ABC home page at the bottom is a link to the Breeders Directory. You can find breeders there. I've bought day-old chicks from Paul Smith for the past two years and have been really happy with the birds. He's very active showing and breeding and is a director for the Ameraucana Breeders Club. I know you won't be disappointed with his birds. There are lots of other breeders who are equally good and honest, but since you have been disappointed so many times, I wanted to sent you to someone I KNOW from personal experience will send you what you want. Pips 'n Peeps, who commented on your birds on this list, is the president of the Ameraucana Breeders Club. She might have chicks available next year.

Good luck.

May I recommend you place an order now for chicks next spring. The better breeders are never have enough chicks to fill their orders, so it is best if you order them now so you will be guaranteed chicks. They'll be straight run (unsexed) so you will have to have a plan for the cockerels which you will surely get.

Your Easter Eggers might be laying a blue egg and you just don't recognize it as blue. When it comes to eggs, "blue" and "green" are in the eye of the beholder. My husband swears my Ameraucana eggs are green, but they are actually very blue when you compare them to the Ameraucana Breeders Club egg-color reference chart. My husband would say every shade on the color reference chart is green except for a few (A1 through A6, A13 and a few others). Almost all Ameraucana eggs have a tinge of sea green to them.

Thanks for the info. I'll bookmark that website & next time I'll order from someone on the list but right now I think I have enough. My dh originally agreed to 4 or 5 - ha, obviously he hadn't heard of chicken math! LOL I now have 15 so don't think I can press my luck too much more.

Thanks! You could be right. I'm gonna check against the chart. I forgot about that. They are both very different shades of green? for sure. Hope your right. Will let you know.

They do tend to look green until you put them in the grass!
