Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Here are some pictures of my birds at the Ohio Nationals. I realized that I am very bad at taking pictures (especially at bad times), so I am going to start making the birds pose for them in hopes of some better pictures. Pullets and a cockerel

Some very young black pullets I purchased. Looking forward to seeing them shape up.Hopefully they are keepers.

Is a Blue this dark undesirable then? Does this pullet have any breeding value?

I hope more experienced people will comment.

The dark color is probably less desirable in a show bird, for no other reason than a lighter blue will be more appealing (and visible) to the judge in the show cage. I think a Blue Andalusian is the standard all blues are judged against, and she is darker than that breed usually is. However, I wouldn't count it against her in the breeding pen at all nor would her darkness stop me from exhibiting her, either.

She has really lovely wide lacing. The definition of the lacing that she has is often missing in Ameraucanas. It's a huge plus in your bird. She also has no rusty color at all, even in her muff. From your picture, it looks as if she is regularly outside in the sun and for her to have no fading/rust in her beard and muffs is a huge plus.

Your pictures don't show the rest of the bird, and there is more to a breeding than just color. I do like her color.

Does anyone have any pictures of 4 to 6 week old chicks with full beards/muffs (double-gene) and the partial gene? Thanks!

No, but keep in mind that as they grow the muffs/beards tend to disappear or become sparse as they molt. They will reappear later and become full when they reach about seven months. If I'm not mistaken, that age you mention is when they really look like they don't have much at all.

Thanks. Someone is selling some in my state that age but they look pretty bare, and one thing I need to concentrate on is getting more beard/muffs not less :) Don't know if I should take a chance or not..

I like her a l lot from what I can see. I prefer the darker blues. Many BBS breeders will breed to blacks to keep this dark blue color....she seems to have good length, good width thru the breast, and a nice wide tail. Camera angles and pose make it really had to say for sure, but from what I see, I would defiantly use her....
