Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I am sure this question has been asked and answered before, but I have yet to find it. Being a nube I bought Ameraucanas from a local "breeder" on a whim in the dark. I have one hen and one rooster. How do I know if they are truly Ameraucanas or if they are EE's. They have all the breed standards as far as I can tell, and all my eggs are beautiful blues. My first few are in the bator now, should hatch in one week. Also, I have no idea what color they are. Is there a link that will show me pics that I can look at? I really want to start a breeding program but I need to know if I should start over, or go with my current chickies?

Check here for pictures. http://www.ameraucana.org/gallery.html

First key to realizing they aren't Ameraucanas for most from what I have heard is the egg color turns out to be something other than blue. Good luck!!

After looking at the gallery, I am pretty sure that I have a buff hen and a splash roo. Since splash is not a recognized color, do I need to get a new roo? I am so new to this and really want to enhance the breed, and maybe become a reputable breeder. Can anyone recommend a good resource to genetics and proper breeding?

If the breeder did not tell you what color you were getting and matching colors chances are you have EE

Hatcheries maintain 2 lines that they cross to feather sex at hatch . So no it will not work for you . Try the tail feather method . Males grow the tail feathers slower . Fairly easy on young chicks .

If yours are Ameraucanas, it is not likely that you have a buff...they are somewhat rare.....if she is an Ameraucana, she is most likely a wheaten....as for the cockerel, I didn't see a pic of a splash cock on the ABC link, so, I'm not sure what you are looking at....post pics and you'll get some better help.....if you are correct and cross a buff pullet with a splash cockerel, you'll get EEs... splash is a double copy of the dilute gene and useful in breeding blues which is a single copy...

Buff and splash should not be mated together. You will create an unrecognized color that does not breed true, iow, an EE. You can breed splash with black, blue or even another splash. Buff should only be bred to buff.

It really sounds like you have Easter Eggers and not Ameracaunas. There are sooo many people out there who sell EE's as AM's, some knowingly, and many unknowingly. You should post some pictures. There are many people in this thread who could tell you right away with good pictures. 99.9% of the time they're Easter Eggers. I've bought many. Luckily, I did not breed and sell them as Ameracaunas. EE's are great birds though, just need to know what you've got if you're going to breed.

If you want to find some true Ameracaunas (not that yours are not, I don't know) this website has a breeders directory along with the pictures and descriptions of the different varieties. You are much more likely to get true, quality AM's from someone on this list.
