Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Anyone have experience with putting day old chicks under a broody Ameraucana? I have 3 new chicks arriving in about 1 week and have a newly broodie Ameraucana, her first time. And boy is she dedicated to the broody cause! Any advice would be appreciated.

Put the chicks under her at night .A small confined space like a nest box is best . By morning they will have bonded .

you're incubating them all separately or letting the hen hatch them? I'm trying to figure out figure out what chick came from what egg after hatching, LOL

I have a post in this thread (a way back) showing how I made "fences" using hardwire cloth for my foam incubators. I can make four (or more) different compartments in my incubator for separating egg/chicks. I can separate several lines using this method. For instance, in one compartment I may have eggs from a blackxblack mating and also eggs from a splashxblack mating. I will know all blues in that compartment came from one mating or pen and all blacks from another. So, I can keep track of up to eight or more pairings in one incubator.

Help please in determining sex of these little guys. Hatched 4/17/15, so 6 weeks now.

With those combs, they all look male.

I posted about my pure Am girl laying a creamish egg a little while ago and got some opinions on her. Well...I just noticed while I was frying up couple of her eggs that the inside of her eggs are pink. Like pink pink. I have never seen anything like it. Even my brown eggs are white on the inside of the shell. What causes the pink hue?

We have done this three times now. The important thing with slipping the chicks under is making sure it is completely dark. The second thing I did was not remove all the eggs under her. The first night I removed 4 eggs and slipped 5 chicks under the broody hen. The next night I removed the remainder of the eggs and slipped the last 6 chicks under her.
The one time we tried to put a full batch of chicks under a broody hen it did not work. The next morning she was off the nest making a run for it. Thankfully she went back to her old egg laying nest to set a new batch. 4 days later we slipped the chicks under her again in two batches. She took to them like a good mama hen.
This is what worked for us. I know of someone that put golf balls under a broody until they got ordered chicks in. I've also read it on the natural chicken keeping board here on the byc. It works great and when you have a really dedicated mama it is sooo awesome to watch =)

She's probably an Easter Egger. I noticed in your profile pictures, none of your birds are 'pure' Ameraucana. They look like hatchery Easter Eggers. An Easter Egger can lay blue, green, or pink eggs.

She's probably an Easter Egger. I noticed in your profile pictures, none of your birds are 'pure' Ameraucana. They look like hatchery Easter Eggers. An Easter Egger can lay blue, green, or pink eggs.

I don't have any pictures of my pures or a lot of my others up. Been a long time since I got to do a photo shoot. I've lost some birds along the way and gained some new. If I get some time soon I'll try to get pics of everybody. But you are correct about some of the birds in my profile being EE'S. They were bought as such and I still adore them.

i know that these aren't the best pictures for sexing but every one of these babies are at least 9-10 weeks old if not older. Help? Also they were supposed to be 3 blues a splash and a white easter egger. One of the blues looks really dark!
