Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Does this guy at 6 months look like a good one to breed or should I hold out for a better roo in my bunch? We really like this guy, but if he has obvious faults we can use another roo.

I have almost zero experience with this, so I'm curious to hear what others say. I can only compare him to my roosters. He's a nice, big boy, but looks to have a little less muff compared to mine, though it may be harder to see because he is black. It also looks like he carries his tail low, but I honestly don't know the correct position yet.
He looks a lot more substantial compared to mine, and I'm curious to hear what people say about that. Here is my splash for comparison

Well.... here I am again (I was watching the BCM Roo critique) and very interested in the responses to this critique. I have a black and a blue roo. I have a lavender too but he is going to a new home. I will take pics tomorrow. I could use some help evaluating them. I have one pic here of the black but it was from a couple of weeks ago and not a good pic.

At 6 months, he looks very good to me, very good type body, nice well defined comb. Hope he grows a tail, and it will come up some. You can see a nice muff and beard in the straight on pics...If he grows a tail, he will defiantly be a keeper.. If your birds usually have better tails, I wouldn't be afraid to use him even if he doesn't grow one..give him some time...you might keep a back up and make a decision in the early spring when he is more mature..

Hon, he looks good! :)

Personally, I'd rather have a lower tail at younger age than higher... seems they tend to go a bit higher as they get older and fill out more... I think he's looking very nice... did he get any leakage at all? I don't see any, but can't see close up...

SC, tail angles for roosters is 45° to the horizontal, hens is 40°... :)

He looks like a very nice young cockerel. As someone has already mentioned, that tail should fill out and may come up some. Personally, I'd much rather see a lower tail set at this age than a too high set, just my opinion. I've had young cockerels with low tail sets that looked just perfect after their first molt.

Looking at the full size picture, though, I am seeing a lack of muffs and beard - perhaps a single gene for the muffs and beard. Fixing muffs and beard isn't tough - I did it on my wheatens in one generation - so that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me, if he is what I had. He has a nice profile and could produce some very nice chicks.

Just for comparison - here is your cockerel, zoomed in on the profile of the face

And here is a young cockerel with full muff and beard

Just my two cents. :)

Thanks, @ravynfallen means a lot coming from you! No leakage yet! Fingers crossed!

If you decide to sell him, you got my number, lol... :D ;)

Seriously, though... I do want to buy either some of his black chicks or eggs he's covered this Spring... :thumbsup
