Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Oh my gosh...he's beautiful!! I hope I get some lovely ones in March! I love the blacks too.
His name is Diego. Since he was a week old chick he has been in love with a BCM. She is not a good BCM, big and akward but Diego's dream girl..... I call her Frida. Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. The other day another cockerel was bothering Frida. Diego went running across the yard so fast to save her. I just happened to be taking pictures. I thought it was so cute.....the background in the picture is all blurry with Diego running to the rescue. Diego is 6 months old.

Really? Last year was my first incubating, and some of my best hatch rates ever were of cuckoo marans in January and February. They were first year layers, and my lowest rate in 3 hatches those months was 87%. I'm hoping my AMs can pull off the same this year. 8 pullets have just started laying, and hopefully I can get 2 dozen eggs within a week sometime in January. As soon as I can, I will set a batch and

I think you should be ok! I just hatched in November and Washington state is much colder then where you are at. Your hatch rate might be a little lower but should get some chicks.

How adorable! Hes a beauty in action too! Thanks for sharing! The ties that bind! He looks like hes running to a fire! It makes me excited to get some boys! I've had to evolve slowly into the thoughts of keeping a rooster. Now I can't wait.! I have a story for you! Truth be known when I was a little girl there was a rooster at my Nana's in Oklahoma..he would wait 4 me to come out of the house and would chase me everywhere and try to attack me. Finally, my uncle Johnny said "Liz, you need to get u a 2 by 4 and whenever he comes after you swing it across his back. Now keep in mind this was in the 1970s...and this rooster was mean! Well, that ole rooster came after me and I swung that board over his back and was he ever surprised! I spent the whole day triumphantly keeping him pinned under a lg cedar tree, that ole rooster never bothered me again! So I spent my first 49 years of my life scared to death of all birds. But I have always been a huge animal lover of horses(was braking them by the time I was 13), dogs cats etc. Just never birds. Some church people dumped three Chickens on us without my knowing..my daughter told them we would take them til they found a place to call home. I was livid! My daughter didn't take care of them and II finally got the courage to drag the petporter around the house and got them into an outdoor pen, was once our cat enclosure. That took ALOT OF COURAGE! So I started giving them food and water..they had been raised by kids, carried around a lot. But little Nelly, an Old English bantam would growl at me every time I walked past the pen cause she knew I didn't like her! Well, then I told the church people they could stay for a few more weeks if necessary...that was almost a year ago! Now? I'm so in love with my mixed flock of 14 birds! They will all land on my arm...alm. all They are so tame, And I have sunk so many hours of time in with them. Theres nothing I can't do with them now. Like giving meds by mouth. Etc. Flapping wings no longer scare me! My friends who know me best couldn't believe my transformation! My best friend in Missouri has had chickens for three decades! I would never go near them! When she first found out she said. "Miracles really do happen"! I'm SO GLAD that I discovered the joy of chickens in this lifetime! You could say I'very come a long way baby! Lol!

I didn't keep roosters my first 3 years. The first one I ever tried was a barred rock, and he turned out to be mean as a snake. I didn't want to try any more after that, but when I wanted to start breeding I had to. Now I have 8 full time roosters, and none are aggressive. They won't let you pick them up, but they don't attack, either. A good rooster that takes care of his flock is a joy to have around. As soon as one flogs me, he gets a trip to the hot tub

It doesn't get any better than this does it! So glad you are having fun and enjoying them, conquering an old fear! I remember in the 70s a 2X4 was the answer for everything. I remember a particularly rank horse and that was the recommended approach! Thank you for your kind remarks about Diego. Let's hope he stays sweet. I make sure I walk right thru him everytime, I never skirt around him. He has to move out of my way and I don't try to make a pet out of him. I hope it works.

Yeah, when the boys get "bigger" that'll be my true test! Surely it won't be that bad! How big do they get? Lol! Otherwise I'll follow SC's lead! Except it will resemble a survivor moment and look like toasted rat over an open fire! Needless to say I have never butchered a chicken! And probably won't...unless the lights go out in America!
