Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

My older BW hen was the only AM out of 8 AMs and two EEs that continued laying through December. The two young AM hens that I got from you started laying in December when they were just over 6 months. The only AMs I have laying at the moment are the three BWs. They lay about every other day. So I do agree with you.
That's good to know. My BW pullets I raised started early too. About a month before show time which surprised and disappointed me at the same time. How did the splash turn out?

Well look at them compared to my royal palm hen turkey that is standing about a foot or two behind him! Is that normal? These are the first True Ameraucanas that I ever had!

I know they came from a very good source! I don't know how they are compared to standards but I like them!

They are heavier than what standard calls for, but fine for a backyard flock. Should protect the ladies well and intimidate any hawks.

The splash is on the smaller side and a little more shy. She may be laying too for all I know, but I do not think so. I owe you pictures and since I have my new camera I have no excuse, except it is cold and I am in and out as quickly as possible. Today it is supposed to warm up for a few days before Sunday's snow.

The BW's are so talkative and very friendly. I have them in the pen with my Lav roo and hen because there are only two of them and they are both sweet and gentle. I need to move the little splash girl over with the BBS, but they are not as sweet and I don't want to her to have to leave her friends. I will wait until spring.

When were you able to tell the pullets from the roos? I have 8 all together and I do think certain ones are roos and such but not 100% sure yet.

You should be able to tell pretty soon but may be a little early! Have they gone through a molt? My BCM are 11 weeks old and went through a molt and I am starting to see pointy ornamental feathers coming in! I hear ameraucanas are a little slower to tell but should be able to tell soon. Have you looked for pointy saddle feathers coming in at the base of the tail on there back?

I find it coincidental that us Blue Wheaten Amer owners find our birds so sweet that we don't want to upset them in any way. Our B/W is a sucky duddy layer - only layed 3 eggs her 2nd year. Any other breed I would've re-homed by now but our Amer (my avatar) is so timid I just couldn't think of stressing her by plopping her into a rescue flock. She barely feels comfortable around her little Silkie friends and has been terrorized by aggressive prior Leghorns in the flock, so I just can't do it to her. I totally understand your thinking.

That I can understand. It is very stressful to move a single bird from her flock to a new one. They usually get picked on, end up being last in the pecking order and don't eat well.

Btw, I have two splash here, from different mothers. One is a bit smaller and also more shy so it may be it's sister.

Do you think they are full grown or will they get any bigger?

If they are only four months they will fill out more, weigh more. Bone wise, they may be done growing. I've seen birds grow quickly before, then stop and end up being same size as others when they catch up or even smaller after the others start growing.
