Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Just a quick note for anyone looking for true Ameraucanas, especially if you are buying day old chicks. Take a look at the chicks of the variety you are getting and make sure they look like what they are supposed to look like. You can see "chick pics" in the ABC gallery at ameraucana.org/gallery.html

So you will know that wheaten/blue wheaten chicks should NOT look like a blue chick, and the only Ameraucana chick that has partridge coloring is a silver.

x2 on Paul. I got my BBS from him, gorgeous birds, and Paul is a pleasure to deal with
I understand some of you use "BBS" to mean the varieties of black, blue and splash and that some fanciers still cross blacks with blues to produce both blacks and blues. This is not a good cross to produce show quality birds though. Top breeders of Andalusian blues breed blue to blue to achieve the best blues. The Standard calls for lacing and without a real involved breeding project, edging is all you will see with black to blue matings. I created LF blue Ameraucanas and they were never developed to the point were they were properly laced, yet they weren't disqualified at APA sanctioned meets. I never liked the fact that they didn't breed true, so I dropped them when I created LF lavender Ameraucanas. They are similar in color blue and breed true.

Thank you for that comment. When I got these birds, I was told that Blue/Blue breeding may wash out the color. I have a black cockerel in with some blue hens, and a splash cockerel with black hens. I'm purposely aiming for mostly blue offspring to see which combination throws better. Only one of my 4 blue hens has prominent lacing, and I'm trying to improve on that.

When's lockdown day?

I understand exactly what you mean by that, and that's exactly what I am. I hope to be a breeder one day, but these birds are the first birds I've ever had that were anywhere near breeder quality. I appreciate the time and work that you and others put into giving us what we have now, and right now I'll be happy to just maintain the quality I have. I go on these forums because it's such a privilege to actually speak to people with so much knowledge, rather than just reading an article on the internet.
I don't want to be a propagator, I want to improve on what I have, and I appreciate the people like you taking the time to educate us new to the breed

That is what I have always understood, as well, Dan. It makes sense that if you are continually breeding in a dilute gene, then you will keep diluting the colors. There are some old time Andalusion breeders that recommend that, too.
