Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

When I got her at the feed store they said they were all ameruacanas

by the way what is the main differences between a Easter egger and a ameraucana ?

True Ameraucana are always sold with the color/variety specified. They have white skin, with a slate wash on their legs. They always have a pea comb. They always have muffs and beards. They should only lay blue eggs. With a true Ameraucana, you can have a pretty good idea of what to expect in terms of temperament, size, rate of development, and laying rate.

Easter Eggers are not sold with any color specified. They can have any comb type. They can have any skin/leg color. They can have muffs, beards, or be clean faced. They might lay any color egg. There is no way to accurately predict what that Easter Egger chick will look like when it's grown up. Easter Eggers have a wide range of size, temperament, rate of development, and laying rate.

With a true Ameraucana, you know exactly what you are getting. With an Easter Egger, absolutely nothing can be guaranteed.
thank you this was very helpful

Girl you really do have some gorgeous birds!!! I love that splash! She looks like she's special! I know I know I've said it before but she catches my eye every time I see her! They are all really nice! How many did u get? Did u cull any? Eye candy for sure!!

I originally got 15 and I have 12 left. The hawk culled for me and unfortunately, they were good ones. I lost a lav hen, black hen, and a blue rooster that was beautiful but had red leakage. My only disappointment was the BW rooster that was colored wrong so now he is a blue tailed red. I still may use him to breed with my BW hens just to see how I come out. I can always give them away as EEs if they are not colored right. I got BW eggs from Mrs BachBach, however my hatching rate was terrible, but I had 6 I think, including a pretty little cockerel. I went on a weekend trip and came back to coccidiosis which I had never had before. Lost all but the two BWs and splash that was in the picture with them. The hatching problem was mine. Using two different incubators and two sources for eggs other than my own, I never got it right. I will be ordering the incubator that SC has and try again this year.

BBS? Are you mixing all 3 varieties together?

A cross between a silver Ameraucana and Blue Ameraucana would result in blue and black first generation offspring.

No, I have blue black splash, i saw a "breeder" hahah selling AmerIcana as true ameraucana with a blue Ameraucana too i gave her. She has him over what she claims are silver Ameraucana but they look like easter eggers to me. I was just wondering how legit it was.

Mrs BachBach, the pictures do not do these girls justice. The BWs have a wonderful personality, and there is more color in their tails than you see here. The splash is turning out to have wonderful color. She had been smaller than the BW girls but she is coming along quite nicely. I believe they are all 3 laying according to differences in the eggs, but I have not had 3 in one day. I will work on getting better pictures of them.
The BW look to have good size and nice tails. On BW sometimes hard to get the blue to show through on the outside. It is good that they have nice clean hackles. I believe that is important in producing clean males. I'm glad you are happy with them. The splash must be a sister to one I have here as she looks almost exactly the same. I have two here from different hens and you can tell them apart as one is larger and darker than the other. Thanks for the pics!

No, I must have been tired. Black, Blue, Splash. My splash from this variety to differentiate from the Wheaten splash.

And before anyone thinks she has red or gold leakage, that is from our red clay soil. We have had rain, snow and more rain so my girls are not at their best. I am no where near ready to start mixing or starting project birds. I leave that to the experts who know what they are doing. If I get a mix, it will be accidental.
Oh, that picture shows her color much better! She does have some nice splash throughout.

Adding to what was already said: I suspect the odds of a feed store selling true Ameraucana would be less than 0% (if that were mathematically possible).

EE are good birds so don't fret too much. I'm learning, too. You'll have to buy from a reputable breeder to get a true Ameraucana. Some hatcheries even call them Americanas to make it even more confusing.

And, sadly, some sell their EE under the name Ameraucana (because there is no EE breed).

There is no such breed as 'Black Star' or 'Golden Comet'; but they still use those names. For some reason, hatcheries have no problem making up names for their sexlinks, but coming up with their own name for their 'Ameraucana' is something they refuse to do.

They use that name because it sells. It is the name most people associate with the blue egg layer. If the hatcheries would at least add some tag to their name or use their version of spelling consistantly , "Americana", that would help. But I think what really needs to be done is 4-H shows and county fair judges need to stop accepting these EE's as Ameraucana in the shows.
