Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I don't want to discredit the store, in fact they are they ones who led me to this website. They take pride in their poultry, it's not just a store with a few bins on the floor with chicks inside, they take customer orders months in advance, some out of state, for a very large variety of breeds as well as other poultry types. They typically have a ship date list and are quite often sold out before they arrive. I'll wait to see if/ how they respond to my inquiry.

I put more blame on the hatcheries. If a feed store buys chicks labeled "Ameraucana", they will sell them as "Ameraucana".

I agree wholeheartedly -- but I also firmly believe that feed stores that have been in business for decades also know by now what the differences are -- I personally put the blame on both hatcheries AND feed stores that in doing business for several years definitely do know better. Tell the feed store you won't do business with them any more and that you'll tell your poultry friends and ranchers the same and see if that helps them get more honest in advertising the breeds they sell. The feed store managers -- maybe not the teenage clerk at the register -- but certainly the order dept is playing "dumb" about selling EEs as Ameraucanas/Araucanas!

I got it at Pickering valley feed in Eagle, Pa. They are a reputable store and get their chicks from a hatchery in TX. I did read that s lot of places sell Ameraucanas and alter the spelling slightly so they can sell EEs instead, but I checked the spelling on their site and it is spelled correctly. I wouldn't expect the incorrect label from this place, but I guess it's possible. I would love to hear more opinions on this.
Hello Amanda! Welcome to BYC

I live in berks county and have purchased layers from Pickering several times in the past. As much as I love the store, the Ams they sell are in fact, Easter eggers. Regardless, I loved all my hens from them! They were all fabulous layers and the egg color one them was gorgeous. If I can find any pics of them, I'll post them! In the meantime, if you're looking for true Ameraucanas, I can help you out connecting you with local breeders in the area.

Chances are the store bought them from a hatchery that advertises them as Ameraucana. I love my local feed store, and the have really nice production chicks, but what they sell as Ameraucana are actually EEs as well

Are they really hard to handle? I'm hoping to add silvers next year but personality is important to me. I really like the color on the hens.
I got silvers from fowlstuff last spring and they were a little flighty as chicks, but as adults they come running to me..I can pick most of them up in the yard and I don't treat them as pets...

I am new to raising BBS Ameraucana Chickens. I recently bought 10 chicks but only 9 survived the ride through the mail. They are now two weeks old and doing well. I just put them in the outdoor brooder yesterday. Prior to that, they were in my house in a large plastic tub/tote. Every time I go to take their picture, they huddle up in the corner so I will try to get better pics later. I can't wait to see how they turn out though. I have raised many chickens over the years but never this breed. I fell in love with this breed the moment I saw them and was very happy to hear that they are calm and friendly too. I knew I wanted BBS but originally thought I was going to get Orpingtons since I had raised Buff and Lavender Orps in the past but I decided to try something new and am glad I did. I look forward to seeing your pics and learning more about them.

I started my first flock of BBS with chicks from Paul Smith last year. This year I have started breeding them, and I love these birds. You will be amazed how the colors change as they grow. Yours look really nice, with really full muffs. Who did you get them from? They look an awful lot like my Smith chicks
