Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Thank you so much for that info!! I honestly didn't know. All of my girls and the boys that stay with them have a dry enclosed space in their coop/run, it's just the four olive egger boys that are the "free-rangers". I'll have to do something about the four boys that are out and about.

Usually, it is the combination of cold and wet that causes problems. Although, in this heat, as someone else said, wet bedding will cause mold which can lead to respiratory problems.

Edited to add: My pens are all covered - mostly because of this South Carolina sun - but I've seen the birds purposely back up to the nipple waterers to let it run down their back in the heat, and cause a small puddle that they will lie in to cool off. Since my pens all have sand floors, the water doesn't stand long enough to cause a problem and they seem to enjoy it, so I just leave it low enough for them to keep doing it....even though it means I have to re-fill waterers more frequently. lol

@RedBanks , the wheaten girls are so pretty. I love the blue wheatens, too. I've always thought they were some of the prettiest Ameraucana varieties. I have an EE hen who is 1/2 Blue Wheaten Ameraucana that has somewhat similar coloring but I just think the subtle shadings of the hens are very soft and soothing.

Thank you.... I bought some beautiful blacks from Susan. I never considered Wheaten but I asked her to throw in a few when she shipped the blacks. I love the Wheaten girls they are sooooo sweet. Never stop talking to me. The two wheaten girls go everywhere together. They eat the catsfood and hang out together. Just so cute.

Awww, sounds like you're really enjoying them. That's great!

The blue wheaten pullet I got from Susan is the same way - just so darn sweet. The gentlest birds I've ever seen have to be Wheaten Ameraucanas. Garfunkel is so nice to the girls and he has never hurt my little ten week old cockerel that is in the same pen right now.

@samouw - thank you for your comment about your birds liking water on them. It is reassuring. Yes it sure does get hot here in the Southeast! The rain here in SC reminds me of Hawaiian rain, not like the cold upper west coast rain at all. My birds in the coop have 80% shade all the time from the tarps over their runs. Mine is built a lot like yours actually. The only birds that don't have full protection all of the time are the four olive egger boys that live in the goat pasture, but they can dash under the goat shelter any time they want. Also, there is so much brush where they roam for them get shade from.

I don't worry about birds...or any livestock...getting wet if it's warm enough outside. I do get concerned when they're wet and cold. As long as they have a dry place to sleep/shelter. I wouldn't worry about it. You do want to make sure that dry shelter is actually dry...not soaked underneath the top layer, which will hold ammonia and grow mold.
