Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

It's sort of a long story. Someone bought hatching eggs from Susan. She marked the eggs so the person would know what pen each chick came from, but the person didn't bother keeping track. The person, myself and Susan did a three way deal and I got a small group of black Ameraucanas. They are all from Susan Mouw's birds, but we don't know which ones are from which breeding. ugh.

Edit - forgot to add... all of her black Ams (if I'm remembering correctly) are from Clif Redden and Paul Smith lines

Yep, that's correct. and what is really strange about that is, out of about 50 blacks that I kept, not one has red leakage anywhere. I just spent two days going over every single one to see if I could track down which pen it was coming from...nada.

Ok... so possibility the leaky cockerel isn't from same pen as your pullets, but could be?

I only asked cuz the pullets can carry leakage but not show it... best to grow out all your first hatches and check the cockerels for leakage...just for future planning... :)

Possible, but surprised I didn't see it when we were going over them here. Oh well...glad it is working out for the better. lol

Edited to add: As my excuse, I'm going to claim not being at the top of my game that day! LOL

Possible..and probably. I know the eggs that were sent were a mix from both pens, so it's likely the birds are a cross from both pens.

I talked to Clif about it, too - said he's never seen red leakage in his lines. I didn't call Paul, but I've never heard of red leakage from any of his blacks. I dunno...it's strange.

Even though both pens were an outcross, of sorts, Clif's birds came from Paul's birds, so it wasn't an extreme crossing of vastly different lines. I'm puzzled by this, but will be watching the birds here for it, too.

I will definitely keep track of the ones I breed just in case it pops up again. It is odd that none other have it, but since there isn't a history of the leakage in the bloodline, could have been a mutation in that one bird? Things like that can happen. I don't know, just throwing out ideas.
