Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

So here is the one with the ear thing. The skin around the ear is really white and flakey. Do chickens get ear mites?

I believe they can get ear mites, but those would make the ear look like it had dark crud in it, due to their blood sucking tendencies...

That looks like infection or maybe wax buildup??? Dunno if that's an issue they get either, lol...

Are there BYC threads that deal with health issues or ear problems that might be helpful? Let us know how things go - pulling for your flock!

@Saris

I think you caught yours earlier than these, but might help you... although I don't recommend peroxide flushes since that will also affect good tissue along with the infection... maybe Betadine solution for flushing?

Thanks. I may do a flush of some sort, probably just some warm saline. So far the ears don't seem blocked or clogged, just swollen with bits of crud in them and the white flakey stuff around her ears and eyes.

We enjoyed showing Ameraucanas at the David Crockett Classic double show today. We took home reserve show champion large fowl in the first show with one of our hens, and reserve show champion large fowl in the second show with one of our pullets. It was a lot of fun!
