Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Beautiful basket of eggs.. What other breeds do you have? I can't wait for my FBCM and true Ameraucanas to start laying...

I'm afraid I am addicted to a lot of different breeds. Every time I hear of another interesting colored egg layer I've got to have a couple.

I know there must be a 12 step program out there somewhere.

The darkest, freckled eggs are from my marans, the almost as dark, golden brown ones are from my welsummers, the EE eggs are obvious and the others are from RIRs, Delawares and Orps.

I'm new to the Wheaten/Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas, but I did notice that the chick that hatched with dark wing tips and dark around the eyes turned out to be a Wheaten rooster. I saw the dark areas when it was still wet, but after it dried it just looked all yellow. On the other hand the Blue Wheaten pullet that hatched in another hatch only had a slight shadow of color on her wing tips when still wet and no color around her eyes. I'm anxious to hatch more chicks next spring and see if this holds true to help determine sex early

Can we post pics and put a link to the BSA section? I don't really cruise the BSA section but do check this thread often. I like knowing when someone has some extra Ameraucanas.

Yes, I think that would be okay. It can be two-fold, to post pics of your birds so others can see them as well as mention that they are for sale in BSA. That is why I didn't delete the entire post, as I would do if someone put a For Sale ad in another section. I see that Jean was showing her birds off, too, which is the point of this thread(nice Buffs, Jean).

Ivywoods-good questions I have had some questions re: lavs.
Clarification: So I would need a lavender chicken in the breeding program to get lavs? (I have blue & blacks.) Lav bred to just blacks? Or will a lav chick eventually "show up" from the blue & black pen w/out a lav breeder? (sorry I may be asking a silly question-I know there are no silly questions but I feel better doing a disclaimer

Jean, I didn't mind seeing your "for sale" birds. It was nice seeing some more pictures.

Hi! Who's your daughter holding in the pic? It's too small to see it good

You do need a lav with the blacks to get lav blue will never make lav.You really don't want to mix lav with blue it can really mess things up down the line. With your boy...I know him well I would get some of Jeans or John's Lavs in hopes for some real nice pullets..He's not a split so you wouldn't get any lavs from the first generation of chicks but the lav gene would be there for the next generation. If you wanted to get some from either of them in the Spring or sooner if Jean's offering

I would go in on a split order if you don't want 15 to 25 chicks I need more wheaten.

Thanx for the info. I had no idea there was soo much to know and learn about colors/breeds/breeding. I should have known but was blissfully unaware. I was "just" a backyard chicken owner. Now, well "things" have certainly taken a big turn. The last few months on BYC has been mindblowing!

I'm having a great time. I'm enjoying my pretty birds and can't wait to start doing some match making and egg hatching. Yes, keep me in mind when making orders.
My daughter is holding a EE/RIR cross. I didn't have "Big Red" off the girls long enough for my old White Ameraucana (prob an EE) to get his placement in the gene pool. But, those babies have been great pets with the kids. I've learned a good lesson about handling the chicks/juvs for it makes it soo easy to deal with them in adulthood.

I would say no. If they are like standards, you have to wait untl they're a few weeks old. Even then, if you have any splash wheaten roos in the mix it can be tricky.

It just depends on what mother nature gives you, the genes are a toss up. I have some fairly new lines of lavender and some are laying nice blue eggs and some are laying green/khaki.

Just don't outcross to a bird with yellow skin, it can haunt you for generations. (which includes orloffs)
