Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I guess I'm just anxious mainly because I thought she was laying in December, so I collected and set a bunch of eggs, and 21 days later out popped a black single combed chick! I was like, "Um, that's not a wheaten." Turns out the eggs were from one of my EE hens, sire by an EE roo!

So, I've been doing a lot of waiting...

I will continue to wait -- like I have another choice, right? -- I just get really excited about my chickies!

Ok still learning about ameracauna so I have a ?
I have 3 Lavender Roos 2 with rose comb 1 with straight comb
They really dont look any different except the 1 single comb
All came from the same person so how can this be
And does it mean its not pure

Lavenders are still in the project stages. Odd combs are still going to pop up. Take which one you like best for type (and known to come from a decent egg color if possible) and breed him to some quality blacks or correct lavs- (if those roos are the only ones you have). If you have a pea combed roo use him and cull the others. .

Ok I have blacks and some really nice Lav hens but not sure what a pea comb is
Let me explain my exp I am a duck and quail breeder chickens are new to me other than cooked or eggs lol
I have been dealing with learning as much as possible and have alot of different chickens
In the last 1.5-2 years I have learned more about chicken than I ever thought I would need to know but
Ameracauna seems to be more complicated than I thought
I know what Rose combs are single combs and v combs but have never heard of a pea comb
Can someone show me a picture of 1

Ok thanks thats what 2 of mine look like I thought it was a rose comb
That makes me feel some what better Thank you very much Crystalcreek

So, my favorite and most anticipated black pullet finally has been laying some eggs. However, I have not been paying attention lately as to which eggs are hers. All I know is that I've been getting some very pretty blues and one very vibrant green every day.

. . . Well, today was the day I found out who the green layer is. The black pullet. Oh gosh, why?! Why her?! I'm seriously contemplating on not breeding her now, because she's sooo nice, physically, but that green egg. . .

Well build the barn before you paint it. I've been told that alot. I guess if you think she is nice in type breed her. Once you can get some that are consistantly like her then you could work on the egg color. One trait at a time. I stress myself out sometimes especially with the Calls because I want to work on more than one thing at a time.

I hate, hate, hate this motto, saying, "breeding philosophy", whatever the hey it is, with a passion.

Why?

If you know, with 100% certainty that your bird(s) has an undesirable trait/genes it should be a no brainer not to put this bird into your breeding program. Essentially all you're doing then is back tracking, quite possibly undoing any good strides you have already made with your breeding. I know a lot of the "old timers" live by this idea, but I feel unless you have absolutely no other choice to use the bird (meaning there is no other viable stock accessible to you) then you should not introduce those unwanted traits.

TK Poultry, my little rant is not directed towards you in any way or fashion, I just cannot stand that thought process!
