Yes it has been freakishly cold here in our neck of the woods hasn't it? I almost lost 3 brooders full of babies, from 4 days old to 3 weeks. All brooders are in an insulated enclosed structure, I knew it was going to be cold so I added another heat lamp to all brooders just incase it was needed. I even ran a radiant heater in the middle of the building. (It's not a huge building...but one radiant heater usually does the trick.....well not the night before last it didnt, not even the extra heat lamps in each brooder helped. Upon checking on everyone yesterday morning on my regular rounds, I found almost every chick not doing well. The one doing the worst was a little 4 day old BCM, he was almost frigid stiff when I found him, but he was still breathing. I gathered all my chicks up as fast as I could and brought all of them in the house. My office is filled with brooders, heatlamps and chicks. DH's 3rd eye is pert near popped out of his head right now with all the chick fuss going on. The little cockerel is doing great....I had a heck of a time getting his body temp back up, but when I went to bed last night he was dive bombing a pile of chicks that were quietly sleeping and minding their own business. Everyone is doing great this morning. I've never had that problem before....so it got pretty dang cold. I sure hope you don't experience any more problems. Stay warm my friend! On the bright side this morning its a balmy 26 degrees and snowing...again!

That's a real bummer on the loss of your bird. Here, winters go to -35 below F routinely and we don't go above freezing for a few months in a row. One of the reasons I chose ameraucanas was because they have 'winter' faces and are very cold hardy. Hope you can figure out what happened.

I think all of ya'll's Ameraucana's are just beautiful, I'am in Alabama and you cant find those hear, I'am looking for some Blue/Splash Ameraucana Chick's, I'am willing to drive and pick up as long as it isnt to far. I'am interested in several, if I can find them, I see that eggs thru the mail are hard to hatch , going thru the mail isnt the greatest way, but if its the only way, then I would be willing to do that also. Thank You. Sharon in Alabama. SpeckleHen, I would love to have Charlotte are Nora there just beautiful.

I'M IN ALABAMA!! I'm in NE Jefferson Co--where abouts are you located? I also have Blue/Splash birds! They are from the Cree line, which I order hatching eggs, and they weren't very successful after being shipped all the way from WA state ~ only 4 out of 16. Of course, I do have to say that I was pretty inexperienced in incubation at the time, so that could also have played a part.

Unfortunately, the little boogers aren't laying right now. My two "senior" hens haven't picked back up all winter, since their molt, but that is probably partly my fault. One is not a very good layer anyway--in fact, I was wondering last year if she was laying at all, and the other has been placed in a temporary enclosure with my newest 6mo blue roo. With all the hub-bub, she's not started laying again. I expect my other 2 hens to start laying anytime now ~ they're only 7 & 8 months old.

Anyway, message me, and we can chat about getting you hooked up!
