The eggs were sold to me as "working on show quality" so she didn't misrepresent the eggs at all. I'm a sucker for the Blues. If I were to "work" on anything, Blue is what I'd work on. (She is busy working on Lavender right now - also not an official color, I know - but I would assume that those working on Splash and Lavender are going for slate legs in addition to the other qualities required?) I'm not far from the US border so I might just have to start paying more attention to what's going on with Ameraucanas in Michigan and Ohio. I could easily transport hatching eggs from there myself.

yeah I know, it's hard to get excited about "best of" anything, when you're the only one!!

Well, if she's "working on show quality" then what she has isn't. I would definitely recommend trying to find something else...let me tell you from experience, it SUCKS when you realize the birds you have aren't what you really want, and it's going to take A LOT more time AND money to get where you need to be, and you have to start completely over from scratch. I did that with my large fowl Faverolles about a year ago, and I am SO happy I did, it has made ALL the difference in the world. It was a hard decision to make, but it was the right thing to do - if I had kept the original flock, my birds would be nowhere near as nice as the ones I have now are.....

Yes, it's very hard.

I still miss 2 of my culls - they had such great personality.

Jeremy, IF someone did cross the Faverolles with Ameraucunas, you might also get five toes....

I cross my wheatens with faverolles to make EEs sometimes. They look exactly like faverolles with blue legs. The last one has 5 toes on one foot, 4 on the other. Thye faverolles and fav crosses have bigger beards than the wheatens.

Yes, I get that what she currently has isn't - and so does she. In reality, I'm not sure I'm actually equipped to go a great distance creating top quality chickens, especially showing. I have a wee tiny farm and I sell colorful eggs on the side. I became obsessed with Ameraucanas, Blues in particular, and figured I'd get a few to run around the yard because they're so pretty. Perhaps I'm caught up in Royal Wedding mania. The pretty commoner that wins the Prince.

And I also get the hard part about culling. Already, I'm totally attached to a youngster that I KNOW has the wrong legs. And because I have a small farm, I really CAN'T keep surplus roos. I can only hope this pretty one I'm getting so attached too proves to be female.

But I am interesting in breeding quality animals - if I breed. So I would like to educate myself.

you have to remember that chick will probably have color "bleed thru" when it gets older...

and the chicks all got poopy butts
i have the same thing going on here
never seen so many chicks with this
when hatching i would might 1 or 2 out of a several hundred
never 40 out of 57
just wondering if something is wrong don't get it
