I'm new to Ameraucanas and have only 2 chicks, 3 weeks old. I had three but one died this morning. I'm wondering if someone can help me sort out a few things.
First of all, I'm not sure what type I have here. I got the eggs from my local heritage bird breeder. I had 8 eggs, which she said were from Wheaten Ameraucanas. Only three hatched. The first one was very yellow and that is the one that died this morning. The other two have dark colouring.
The yellow one seemed a bit weak from the start, but seemed to rally and looked fine, until this morning, when it was suddenly inactive, and within an hour of the time I noticed it, which was on coming into the coop first thing this morning, it died. I had noticed at day one that it had a broad little face, which struck me as unusual. I'd never seen a chick with such a broad face. Altogether, this one looked different than the other two, in colouring, and in the broad face, and initially less active. So I'm wondering if it might have had a problem from day one. The breeder said the eggs might have been a bit too old, as she got them from her daughter and they might have been sitting too long, which is probably why only 5 hatched. We had checked the other eggs after a few days and there were no chicks inside the shells. They were supposed to have a good fertility rate.
So, one question I have is: was there perhaps something wrong with this chick from day one, or was the broad face not unusual for an Ameraucana?
And then, why would that one have been totally yellow and the other two a darker colouring? I understood they were from the same parents. I don't know much about colouring, as you can tell.
Any idea what type of Ameraucana chicks I have here? and any idea if they might be male or female? I've learned from experience that in other breeds, the chicks with dark heads tend to be male. Is that true of Ameraucanas? I'll post two pictures. Not the best shots, as they won't sit still for long.
