Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I have often wondered how they get so much money for birds that are crow headed. (Seems to be mainly in the heavy breeds). Their descriptions almost make me want to buy their birds, but when I look at their photo's I think Wow! and not in a good way. If they can get that kind of money for what I see them selling, more power to them.

Greenfire may serve a valuable purpose for many? They offer some unique breeds and color varieties. They have created a business model that capitalizes on those wanting something that is unique or superior. In the end, the product does not necessarily have to be so. They create the image with their marketing, including the web site. To my knowledge they do not show and win with their birds, and I don't know that they have conducted any trials to substantiate any superior productive or genetic characteristics. Those with wisdom and common sense will apply the doctrine of "caveat emptor".

I think the breeder might have mislead you or maybe they don't know the difference, but your pullet is an easter egger, not an ameraucana. it doesn't have a beard and isn't a recognized color. she'll probably lay you some nice green eggs though

Works just the same, at least for my daughter. I will add pics of the blue soon.

So, the Ameraucana should have the full beard and ear tufts? The color did look different than some I found on here.

Thanks.

My project eggs from my Buffs x Wheaten rooster are hatching this morning and the first chick is SOLID buff colored

Who knows what color it will feather in, but I think it is a good start

It appears to be a rooster by its size and head shape. I am getting pretty good at picking out the roosters in all my breeds by head shape when newly hatched

They do a great marketing job...no doubt about that. Most of the breeds/varieties they sell are non standard birds, so they would not do well in a show. Their heavy breeds (Brahma's, Orps etc) are all crow headed in the pictures and given their descriptive skills and marketing I would have to say that those are the best they have.

I'm kind of a poultry snob, so their stuff does not appeal to me. I like many of their breeds, just don't like the way they are physically put together. There is a lot more to a chicken than the feathers. Crow head and legs too close together does not make a good bird of any breed. In the old days those kinds of birds were called "unthrifty" and culled. I appreciate their efforts importing the birds and hope that eventually they can improve what they have.

Business is business and especially in these times.... if they can get that kind of money....more power to them I understand the need to recover their investment, but as I tell my doctor "I know your schooling cost a ton of money, but why are you trying to get it all back in one day"?

Walt, can you explain what crow head is? Or why/how it happens?

I'm guessing it's exactly what it sounds like... a chicken with a head shaped more like a crows?

Wow guess I said the wrong thing.
So does anyone have an answer to my question about the chocolate gene being sex linked?
I have asked another question a few times too. Can splash be solid white?
Sometimes when I ask a question and no one answers I figure no one is reading. I just read an entire page of greenfire farms negativity. So I guess folks are reading.
So does anyone have answers to my questions?
