Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I can understand where you're coming from as I've had similar experiences when trying to educate eBayers about the "Americana" or even "Ameraucanas" eggs they were selling. Some have been appreciative but most, unfortunately, have been much like your experience. One would think if someone has been a breeder for 25 years they would at least know what they heck they are trying to breed. Unfortunately, the fact is some folks pride will simply not allow them to say, "Thanks. I didn't know that."

Btw, just FYI, I took a look at your website and thought I'd pass on a couple of things that you probably would like to know. First, contrary to what you say under the "Hatchery Araucanas", it's not all that hard to distinguish between a "hatchery Easter Egger and the APA Ameraucana". One only needs to know what an Ameraucana is and the Club website makes that pretty easy.

Second, not all Easter Eggers have green legs. Some will have slate or blue/black legs. I can't tell for sure but the pictures you show on your website appear to have slate or blue/black legs. I also have several EE's running around my place that don't have green legs. These are the result of making my own EE's.

Along those same lines, whether the EE has yellow skin or not, I guess would all depend on what the Ameraucana (or Araucana) was crossed with.

Other than those few minor things, you've done a really good job at educating the public.

God Bless,

Royce,
I was just checking out the photos of your Barnies on your Website... Are those 'single' laced as opposed to 'double' laced? The second inner lace is almost not there. I'm looking at the picture labeled 'Rose Combed.-From Front.' Seems that way in some of the other pics as well. Just curious...

Thank you for the info. I was aware ( not being proud just lazy. LOL!) It can more difficult to distinguish between an EE and an Ameraucana , than a Araucana and an EE. I will try to go back and re address that. You are correct that not all have green legs, I was being general and should have been more accurate. I have a couple that have slate legs, but the majority have green legs. I was trying to put a few easy to recognize items out there for people to quickly be able to spot about their own birds. The finer points about the differences I will leave for the Ameraucana breeders to point out as I still have trouble with them also, because it is not really a breed I am familiar with.

Hi Steve, I need to get rid of all those pics and start over. Those were from a few years ago and are not very good representations of what I have now. All my Barnies are double-laced including my RC Barnies now. In fact, my RC Barnies are almost as good now as my standard Barnies. After this year's matings, I expect one won't be able to tell the difference.

One of these days soon I'm gonna make the time to go shopping for my new camera. I will be getting a new Canon 7D and several lenses. Once I get that I plan to take a bunch of pictures of my various birds and create a new website for myself. For now I can tell you that in the last couple of shows I've attended my Barnies have done pretty well. The male that I took to the show a couple of weeks ago took 1st Place amongst the males as did the one I took last March. Two different pullets have taken Best of Breed in the last two shows and the one I took in March got Reserve Continental as well. She lost Champion Continental to a very nice male Faverolle.

I'm pretty happy with the lacing I've got now as well as the green sheen in the black. What I'm really working on now is improving their leg color. Of course I'm also trying to get darker eggs like most everyone else too.

God Bless,

maybe you guys can help me. I was told my chick maybe not be an Ameraucana. Not though it's still growing its only four months so it's still a baby and has a lot of growing to do. so it's going through the ugly stage getting bigger feathers. I got it as an egg from my friend who has Ameraucanas. Please be gentle

oh no I didn't get it from Montana I got the eggs from a friend who lives out of state. She sent me some eggs and Skye was the only one to hatch from that set. I do have a Ameraucana x cochin pullet that also hatched with Skye and a Silkie x Ameraucana pullet as well.

The person who told me Skye wasn't an Ameraucana just said "I can tell you from the current picture, however, that your bird lacks a muff, which is an essential feature for an Ameraucana". end quote. And I explained to them that it was still growing that it's still a chick. That's fine that they think that no worries. I don't expect it to be show quality. I don't really plan on showing any of my birds there basically pets

..

Not sure what I'm gonna do with him though. Id like to keep him. I've seen pictures of Skye's dad and he's one handsome rooster.

I'll probably end up keeping him lol heaven forbid if I don't Id never hear the end of it from my daughter lol. She named him Skye sigh lol.. I have dilemma though. Should I put some hens in there with him? If I did I wouldn't incubate the eggs though. He's use to being with the ameraucana x cochin and the silkie x ameraucana pullets.
