Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

My ameraucanas have only just started laying so it is not really an issue that I am dealing with yet. I am curious how Tailfeathers breeds for larger eggs. And I wonder how breeders like... Wayne Meredith breed for larger eggs. I have a wheaten pullet who's genetics I believe came from his efforts. Of my pullet eggs she is laying the biggest one so far. My goofy brain isn't satisfied with just getting new birds... I need to know HOW. lol... like I said.. goofy brain.

Hey we have seasons! On a scale of 1 to 10 our seasons are probably a 2 but the chickens can tell when its winter!

I actually live at 3000 ft elevation on the slopes of a huge (mostly dormant) volcano that actually gets snow on it. I will admit for me REALLY cold is 48. lol And REALLY hot is 85. I know...you hate me. lol

I lived through a winter on Oahu. Sears sold out of blankets when it hit 53. Oh, and there was no central heat/air in the house. You just opened the window to allow the trade winds to blow through.

But Christie, I am not sure I'd be willing to actually live on the volcano, dormant or not. Nice green eggs, btw!

Here are some silver project chicks. They are 3/4 silver and 1/4 wheaten.I will only use the 2 0n the left. The rest will be go to the sale.I will then mate these together to improve size in my silvers. Will be hatching more of these.I see a lot about changeing roosters on here.I pull a rooster then continue to collect eggs for 1 week.I then add the new rooster and start saving after 1 week.I did this on this pen and had a wheaten rooster in there before. As you can see there no wheaten chicks in this first hatch.

Pretty! Do you know what the others will feather in like?

They will look silver but will show some of the wheaten traits as they feather. Most notably the white beard and splotches on the males. The old english do not recognize the wheaten male. They are shown as BB red.Silver and light brown are the same pattern [wild type] just silver or red.So wheaten is very close in genetics to silver. The reason to cull at day old is to eliminate the chicks with wheaten traits. They look close to the striped chick pattern but slightly different. This speeds up the process of getting back to the true silver pattern. The off color males will be unable to distinguish from pure silvers at maturity.Unless they do not have enough black striping in neck and saddle.

Remember that blue-silver-cuckoo chicks I posted pics of recently? Buffygrl just hatched another one out. I know I didn't have any eggs mixed up this time. Its out of the cuckoo split for lav roo and my black, lav, and split hens.

Any possibility I would end up with that color if my black is hiding silver?

I have 25 Lav/Split eggs that just went into lockdown! I started with 30, 5 had noticeable blood rings on day 8 so I chucked them. I can see 7 or so with good veining, but I can't see a darn thing on the other 18 eggs because they are so dark. All but three felt the right weight when I took the turner out tonight, though. Soon, I will have new fuzz butts running around!

That nice blue egg is from the first hatch isn't it Christie? Congrats!

Yes it is! My sweet darling Baltadina! Thank you so much for her. My first hatched chick and such a darling. She was an only chick for the first 2 weeks of her life. So she really prefers humans. She cannot understand why I have her penned with CHICKENS!! Can you imagine such a thing??!!

She looks at me all the time as if to say "why? why am I in here with chickens??"
