Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

MoriahQ, I see you're in Utah, do you have any APA (American Poultry Association) shows near you?  I went to one near me three years ago and it was an eye opener.  I was able to attend the Crossroads Show in Indianapolis last October and took the following pictures of some of the Ameraucanas that were shown.  If you go to an APA show, you can get an Exhibitor List from the Show Secretary.  Each bird's cage has a card with a number (you can see this in the pictures), you then match the number to the list of Exhibitors and you will have a name and address to contact.

Thanks. I've attended some of the Utah Fancy Poultry shows. The rooms were full of modern game and OEG. There were few other breeds. They are the APA shows for this area twice yearly.

I really appreciate the photos. It reinforces that I'm not on the right track, but gives me something to look for. Maybe I can get some locals to go in with me on a John B order, or maybe I'll have to be content w EEs.

Thanks for taking time with a newbie. :)

There was a website that showed breeding pens and what specifically the breeder was working on with each group. It was very illustrative, but I can't seem to find it now. They were mostly wheatons, I think.

It is probably labeled that way because ameraucanas can come in splash wheaten also. They aren't as well known or prevelant as the regular splash, but sometimes to let people know exactly which variety you are talking about it helps to add the blue or wheaten to the label.

Thank you, everyone! I thought it was interesting that it was called blue splash at a show, BUT it makes sense if there could be confusion with other splashes. I'm always learning...

It's a gorgeous rooster, regardless of whether it's called blue splash or splash :)

Hey guys, I havent really posted in here since my birds where about 10weeks old, now theyve grown up!
They are now almost 6 months old. Please look and give me feedback about their quality.

Me and my hens :)
The color on Bad is very nice and neat. The blue on Blue is as well but that eye! He is creaping me out! lol
Your hens look very like they have full hocks and muffs... but it would be nice to see them on their own. I am assuming you don't wear that to muck out the coop. I want pictures of that if you do!

Does any one have pictures of what a splash looks like ? I just got some Blue and some black Ameraucanas and I'm not sure what a splash looks like
I was going to post a pic of one of my hens until I scrolled ahead and saw the Rooster below... .
Another picture from the Crossroads Show in Indy Oct '11......

Paul and Angela Smith Blue Splash Ameraucana

Holy cow. So nice! I thought my guy was nice but I think maybe I need to upgrade! I notice that all the show pictures are of cocks. Why??

The hens weren't placed as high and didn't want to cooperate for pictures.......like this Blue Wheaten hen........
I also don't have the exhibitor's name so I can't give credit to them......

And that John Blehm Silver is a pullet........

Genetically is there a difference between a "Black Splash" and a "Blue Splash"? Aren't they both basically black birds with two doses of dilution? (One dose = blue, two doses = splash?)

Forgive me if I'm way off here; I'm trying to wrangle equine color genetics into the poultry world.
