These are wheaten/blue wheaten Ameraucanas. I was told I'd know by week 3 what genders they were, because the males would begin to get in dark brown wing feathers. The only one that has them that I can tell is #3. #1 has an oddly large, "poofy" tail - not sure if it was just standing funny or if this is an issue (?) I'm really good at hatching cockerels, so at first I thought I had three of them...now, I'm wondering if maybe only #3 is a cockerel?

Anywho....what do I have here?

Here's #1:

Here's #2:

#1 is a blue wheaten cockerel

#2 leaning towards a splash wheaten or blue wheaten pullet

#3 leaning towards a wheaten pullet

What color was the rooster and what color hens was he covering?

Thanks, Cyn - boy, was I ever way off base! Gosh, I can tell with my EEs at 2 weeks, but these purebreds...nope!

Hi Ladies

1 - blue wheaten boy
2 - blue splash pullet - a blue wheaten would have some blue on wings, wheaten would have black on wings..... this chicks has neither. So, I vote blue splash
3 - wheaten pullet - you can tell by the black on wings.

As for the parents. it was all 3 varieties mixed together.... but the blue wheaten rooster was the dominant one and I think the only one breeding.
I have kicked out the other boys, and now am only using the wheaten male.

texasgal, there's always so much to learn!

Most of the breeders I've bought eggs from have been MORE than happy to help me with gender...they know their breeds and, in particular, their LINES, so they have way more experience than I do!

Well, at least I'm tryin' to do some learnin' BEFORE I get chickens, huh? I've been obsessed with this site for 3 solid days now .. my husband says I need medication .. LOL .. "They're JUST chickens" he says .. ha!

Don't worry....we'll change his mind! Before you know it, he'll be saying, "Honey, when are we going to be hatching again?" HA!
