So my gf finally got home and I didn't have as much trouble convincing her to help me as I thought I would (you see, she's not too keen on geese in general and my gander Gus in particular. It might have something to do with the fact that he approaches her as if he were in a jousting tournament and his head and neck were his lance that he was going to use to impale her). I just hinted that it might be in our discretionary funds' best interest if she were to help me by holding on to Gus while I looked in his mouth...she relented in record time !!! (The last time we took one of our animals to the Vet. it was one of our Cayuga ducklings that had swallowed a piece of twine and I was afraid he wouldn't be able to pass it without causing irreparable damage to his insides so we took him in to see the Doc...yeah, that was the year where the only souvenir we had from our vacation was that darling drakes little
piece of twine...lol !!!). Anyway, she helped me and I got a really good look in and all around his mouth and bill, even lifting up his tongue to make sure
nothing was trapped under there like Miss Lydia's friends' goose had. I didn't find a thing. I poked and prodded and even squeezed the swollen area
between my thumb and forefinger just to make certain that nothing was inside of it...and there wasn't. He didn't display any signs of discomfort or pain when I squeezed it either. I mean, he didn't like it one bit, that's for sure, but he didn't try to pull away or bite my gf or anything...he didn't even let out a disapproving hhhoooonnnnkkkk to let me know that I'd crossed the line and he'd had enough. So my best judgment at this particular time is to treat it cautiously and conservatively. I'll keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get bigger, painful or infected, and if it does...well, I get sea sick just standing on the pier, there's no need for us to pay to go on a cruise to find that out...lol !!! We can just stay at home and sit out by the pool (kiddie pool that is)...with Gus !!! Thanks for the suggestions and if it doesn't go away on it's own within a week or so, I might try giving him some antibiotics prophylactically. I just really don't like to give them anything unless 1. I know what it is I'm treating (for) or 2. there has been such a drastic demise in their physical, mental or emotional well being so as to warrant the application of unscientific guesswork out of fear that they'll die if something isn't done for them. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks again.

@ buff goose guy...so glad to hear that she's at least eating !!! It's been my experience with wounded animals that as long as they still have a few basic drives left (and the love and help of someone who cares about them), they will usually find it in themselves to recover. Good luck !!!
Could be he got bitten by a spider, but if he is acting normal [well normal as a goose can act] then hopefully what ever it is will take care of it's self. You could boost his immune system with some poultry vitamins while he is dealing with this.

miss Lydia I thought I let you know that my goose laid a beautiful egg with shell . I could not fine that calcium citrate TSC dose not carry it. so I bought the biggest bag of oyster shells they had. I thought she was laying this morning she was in her house then came out to eat then went back in but I had to go to work as soon as I got home I checked I was so happy. they are not happy with me I locked them up in the dog run which is were there house is, the coyotes are getting closer I was up in the middle of the night yelling to scare them away the were in the back field I have 2 donkeys I was worried about them one is a big baby. I am going to get an incubator Friday. any suggestions on what brand.

I have no idea on incubators but you might check out the learning center here on BYC might get some ideas there. I thought donkeys were good at predator protection. i see them all over here in with cattle, goats etc. I would be very concerned though coyotes are scary. Glad you were able to scare them off.
Awesome about the egg too. Calcium citrate would be drug stores, Walmart, Calcium gluconate would be TSC

You must be a mind reader Miss Lydia because last night at last check and lock down, I made them a fresh bucket of water and dropped in some powdered vitamins and electrolytes.
Then I got to thinking about all the strange and delectable (to a goose, anyway !!!) bugs I've been seeing around here since it rained and wondered if maybe he could have inadvertently (or on purpose) picked up some grass or hay that some bug had gotten a ride to his mouth on and once inside, took the opportunity to thank my gander for his trouble by biting him in the kisser !!! IDK, but it sounds plausible. When I checked him this morning it looked the same so I'm continuing with the 'wait and see' treatment plan.

@donkeydew2farms ...as far as incubators go, I have heard excellent things from some of my friends who use the Brinsea brand of incubators. They're a little more on the pricey side than others out there, but you could look on CL, or I know they have them for sale used on ebay. My favorite brand of incubator for just about any poultry egg imaginable is my little broody Riley Roo, a splash silkie...best hatch rates ever with her on the job. And no temperature or humidity problems either...lol !!! Good Luck !!!

Can't wait until I get my first goose egg...EVER !!!

Hova-Bators are great table tops, I have two 1602N's, best styrofoams I have used and they are really affordable. Only downside is that GQF (the company) is has really poor customer service...

you are so right mightymax. I would rather they do it them self's. It is in case of emergency . and yes miss Lydia donkeys are suppose to be protectors. it could be why I haven't been bothered yet . there hay roll is right there in the next pasture. They don't like dogs at all. here are my two geese Hansel and Gretel.
