I'm getting a pair of American Buff geese from Ideal. I've done a lot of research, and they seem to be one of the calmer and docile breeds (though, I do expect some male agression during breeding season). Just curious if others have raised them and, if so, what were you experiences. Also, if anyone has pics of their geese, I'd love to see those.

I'll post pics when I get mine later this week.

I have buff americans. My gander chases strangers but the only time he's nipped or walloped me is when goslings hatched. That said, there is not a gander alive I would trust around small children from jan-july.

Thanks for the info, ultasol. Luckily, I don't have small children.
Also, very nice looking Buff. I like the way the bill stands out in contrast to the feathers. Looks like a nice view, too

I have one blue american goose, same breed, different color

She is very calm, and quiet compared to my embden. She is not aggressive at all (though that may change once she has babies). The only time she has shown any aggression is when my son went to check her nest for eggs and she was on it, she kind of threw a fit

But they are very nice birds.

I also have american blue geese. Normally my gander is the friendly one. He likes to curl up in my lap and hide his face in my shoulder while being loved on. As of about 4 weeks ago that is no longer the case. He is now in love with my Embden female and ignores his blue female. Ugh! He is being quite the pain and they have all been in so that I don't attach him.

I sure hope my "sweet boy" is back before July. <sigh>

We have an American Lavender goose and an American Blue gander. Pics can be seen on our website. As usual they are friendly and will eat out of your hand until breeding season. We already been in about 4 "fights" with Fred this year. He's just being a good hubbie though

As per advice in Holderreads "The Book of Geese" I do not handfeed my geese, especially not my ganders, as I don't want them to think it is ok to mouth me or do anything that in any way resembles biting me. It's like training a dog or a horse, you can't have something be 'good' sometimes and 'bad' another, so I just teach them that it is not ok to put their mouth on me.

Safety first.
