American Gamefowl

Well. It's been a while since I looked into Quail but the one thing I didn't like, it seemed you'd constantly need to incubate if you wanted to raise for meat, since the little hens really don't sit.

A lot of folks do meat chickens, I've not. You could look into some of those Rangers that are supposed to do pretty well, but I'd say cockerels might have to be butchered fairly early or they may harass penned roosters.

Of course, you've raised layers, so you know them. Probably the easiest thing to do if you have a place to keep them.
I’d probably pen the layer breeders like I do the gamefowl an the young would most likely free range I highly doubt they’d get frisky with the cocks if game stags are on the yard. Long before I catch up the gamefowl I’d say the layers would be culled an good eating size by then.

Idk I’m not convinced I can handle more load at the moment. It’s more or less a thought just in case it hits the fan or we get locked down once again. Atleast I’d have some meat and protein I can likely keep coming for awhile without wasting money at the grocery store on chicken and eggs.

You could let the youngsters roam for sure.
Those halflings I had last year roamed and didn't mess with the roosters. But I did process cockerels at around 12 weeks IIRC. Wanted to go longer, but that was the timing I needed to deal with.
Kept Chloe!😱 though, she's now housed with the layers. Can't complain, she's produced quite a lot of eggs.

I've got 3 Sapphire Gems roaming with the GF Gang. Of course when I got them, I popped them under Tetsy so they began roaming right off the bat. They forage pretty decent, fairly predator aware.

Yes, it's just something to think about for sure.

I hope too get some very late season hatch from this trio.

Weed patch over raised gardens that birds spend a lot of time in. Weeds a good 15 feet tall.

Cock and hen sort of hiding. Color not best for it.

Two late season chicks that sleep next to dog at night.

I don’t get caught up in looks much these days but this is one good looking stag. My own personal blend of Del Mac mug, havoc black, havoc blue/mug.
