That really depends on the hen and how they’re kept. For me hens loose with chicks will keep them a few weeks longer than if they were penned. Some hens are done after 3-4 weeks. Once they start laying eggs again it’s best to take the hen away from the chicks if they’re penned. Usually she’ll start getting annoyed with them after she starts laying.Watch age do you guys find that the hen will usually wean the chicks?
My hen weaned her chicks at 6 weeks and went broody. She had run off the cockerels 2 weeks before she weaned the pullet chicks.
Oh I see. Do you notice that the hens will run off the cockerel chicks before the run off the pullet chicks? That really depends on the hen and how they’re kept. You should sign up for the hunter Ed courses. Even if you never want to hunt it’s a good learning process. You can complete an online version and then go to a field day to obtain your hunter Ed certificate. Check the schedule I gave the link to awhile back. It’s best to attend one in August. They aren't as busy.I have a small pocket knife and I don’t think my mom would be happy if I used the meat cleaver to kill a coon and then put it back in the drawer.![]()

It’s usually the stags that are being annoying but no I’ve had hens go after pullets too.Oh I see. Do you notice that the hens will run off the cockerel chicks before the run off the pullet chicks?
My hen ran off the cockerel chicks because they were messing with the pullet chicks.
Yep. You have to do it if you ever want to get a license. It’s a prerequisite. I think there should be a mandatory refresher course for all the weekend warriors that only hunt during deer season. “Invasion of the pumpkin suits”That sounds really cool. I’ll definitely look into it. Thank you.
