American Gamefowl

I do like listening to them while they’re hunting. Not so much any other time though.
I was just talking to a guy not too long ago that still runs hounds. He was saying that just like most breeds half of em won’t hunt anymore. Told me of a story about a guy who paid 4K for a top of the line blue tick. They turned em out and the dog went back to the house. :lau:lau

Lol, 4K porch dog would be tough to swallow

I think it’s always been the case with hounds though... there’s always duds in every line...and always been lines that are better than others...

My buddy ran walkers for years and had a real hot nosed male with a big booming voice that was a dream... he went back and bought a full brother from a litter a few years later and that one never was even half the dog...

There’s more walkers around here than all other breeds, but that just means a lot more culls too...

Our other friend ran Blueticks and his dogs were solid but not top end for that breed... they ran quite a bit different than walkers all around though...

I raised beagles as a kid, and my dogs were always better than anybody else’s that I hunted with, but it wasn’t about good lines... it was because we lived in the sticks and I turned them out to train nearly every evening, vs sitting in a back yard fence or kennel...

... and more than that they were out with a adult dogs as soon as the could be, and those adult dogs did all the teaching ...

I only ever had good blood toward the end when a friend gave me a litter of pups that my dog fathered during an attempted hunt ... old Boots was not about rabbits that day ;)

It's the case with about anything. I think all one can hope for is something they can count on when need be more so than a few greats here and there.

If I was stranded sure I'd eat whatever, but like Havoc pointed out if you got the time to make coon look good an tasty you ain't starving. Without that will to survive I couldn't get the thought of nastiness out of my head. I don't even wanna skin one but I reckon I will eventually.

Plus I've seen at least 20 deer in the past week they ain't no shortage of them either and I'm 99% positive they eat better and taste better.

I used to clean a couple for my dad around Christmas each year... I never thought they were bad, but nothing I’d go out of my way for...

My dad always ate snapping turtles too... and that is something I think I’m going to have to make next summer...

as nasty as those critters look, there is not much I’d rather have than turtle stew done right

It anything you’d think I’d get a lab since I duck hunt. Nope I just don’t like em. It’s never even crossed my mind. Well except the few times I’ve fallen in trying to wade out to deep water trying to retrieve a downed bird.

Not a lab fan myself when I meet my wife they had a yellow one it never shut up. His name was Chester shortly after hearing him all night I renamed him Chester the molester after the abuse to my ears.

My cousin was big on ducks and always had cocker spaniels... that’s a breed that has some non hunting lines for sure...

He ended up with some other spaniel breed later though
