I do like listening to them while they’re hunting. Not so much any other time though.
I was just talking to a guy not too long ago that still runs hounds. He was saying that just like most breeds half of em won’t hunt anymore. Told me of a story about a guy who paid 4K for a top of the line blue tick. They turned em out and the dog went back to the house.![]()
Lol, 4K porch dog would be tough to swallow
I think it’s always been the case with hounds though... there’s always duds in every line...and always been lines that are better than others...
My buddy ran walkers for years and had a real hot nosed male with a big booming voice that was a dream... he went back and bought a full brother from a litter a few years later and that one never was even half the dog...
There’s more walkers around here than all other breeds, but that just means a lot more culls too...
Our other friend ran Blueticks and his dogs were solid but not top end for that breed... they ran quite a bit different than walkers all around though...
I raised beagles as a kid, and my dogs were always better than anybody else’s that I hunted with, but it wasn’t about good lines... it was because we lived in the sticks and I turned them out to train nearly every evening, vs sitting in a back yard fence or kennel...
... and more than that they were out with a adult dogs as soon as the could be, and those adult dogs did all the teaching ...
I only ever had good blood toward the end when a friend gave me a litter of pups that my dog fathered during an attempted hunt ... old Boots was not about rabbits that day
