American Gamefowl

Hello new here can anyone tell me how these different line are supposed to lay or how they do at foraging. Mostly curious about pumpkin hulsey and brass backs
Generally they lay half what a layer breed lays and most will try to set and hatch their eggs at least once a year. All gamefowl do well loose. You’ll still lose them all if you don’t pay close attention to what’s going on.

Welcome To BYC and the Thread! :frow

I'm still a newbie with GF, but my little hen and chicks seem to be doing well loose and foraging. Of course, free choice feed is always available for them too. I try to call them in fairly often and keep tabs on them, they will venture pretty far.

Yes that was one of the things I was looking for what else would be a good choice for low maintenance
I'm just now doing a quick glance about Iowa Blue since I'm not familiar with them.
Do you already have Iowa Blues?
Seems they are touted and possibly originally bred (created) to be good foragers, but you may want to contact a place like the Iowa Blue chicken club (linked below) to ask what is a good cross if that's what you are wanting to do.

I will say this, I do have 1 GFxLayer cross (Chloe!😱). She does pretty good at foraging, but she has really observed and hung with my GF hen and chicks. Starting out, she did o.k., but it seemed like she needed to "learn". The GF hen is excellent, but that's do to how she was raised and bred (Thanks Havoc!) My point is, I think a lot of layer breeds have a huge learning curve, even though this pullet is 1/2 game, she doesn't have near the instincts that a full game seems to have right off the bat.
Just my observation and 2¢ on that matter.

A lot depends on whether or not you already have chickens, how much space you have, coops, pens etc..
Allowing birds to run loose full time isn’t necessarily less work and maintenance. I do it successfully but I will still lose a bird here and there usually to a fox before I can catch him.
I trap a lot of animals and I’m willing to kill just about anything messing with my birds.
Also I free range birds because it’s better for them to grow strong and healthy not because it’s less work or I don’t have the time.
