American Gamefowl

Well the baby stags are Crowing now and I finally grew a set and decided to free range all the pullets and hens no losses yet but I’m sure there will be
It can be nerve racking, at least for me LOL
You mentioned something a while back about wanting to clear off some brush before letting them loose. I understand brush is a good hiding place for predators but it also provides cover for the birds too.
Yesterday that blasted Hawk was at it again. I heard that hen carrying on. She was down on the edge of the field and creek, no chicks to be seen. I couldn't find any of them. It's very dense along the creek with briars, brush, some old logs and such. I waited for a while and went back with scratch and called them. I was worried to death of course. I could finally catch a glimpse of her she was set in between some logs in there (deep shadows and dark birds), she finally moved and all the chicks came out with her. Chloe!😱 was there too, she was hard to see as well. Whew!!! They ate their handfed scratch and went back in there! That's the Thanks I get for worrying LOL Back at it in the same place:hmm but they have really good cover there, but that don't mean the Hawk, a fox or other critter can't work their way in there either.

I watched for her and she worked her way up the creek some more then came across to one of the buildings then hopscotched back to their run.
Open spaces, not too good.

Free ranging isn’t so bad as long as you keep weapons within easy reach of multiple places around your yard. Loaded shotgun on the deck, another in the shed, throwing knives stashed near the coops, a few battle axes strategically placed can also be helpful. I prefer throwing tomahawks though. I like to give them a sporting chance.

Lol he’ll yeah man I’ve got enough guns as long as I can hear them I should be good but my hearing isn’t the best anymore so the wife and the dog has to be my alarm

I don’t do any of that. Just the guns. Lol once it cools off it’s way easier with a window open or at least cracked so you can hear them. If they make a noise at night get out there fast so you can at least see what it might be.
During the day isn’t too much of an issue usually. Occasionally a fox will show up during the day and of course hawks but you can scare off hawks pretty easily.

That would be legendary if you did kill a hawk mid air with a throwing knife lol and yeah I always keep my window cracked I can hear the yard pretty good unless the creek is running like a river.

Blurry, but these 2 are most alike. I *think* pullets. Preening so you can see their white wing feathers LOL
