American serama thread!

My seramas free range with all the larger birds too. In fact, my young cockeral, at less than 6 months, is already breeding and challenging the others for dominance. None of them fight to the death, just petty squabbles.

Random humor for the day.

and yes this happened to me last night the whole conversation was drawn out and hilarious!

So i was cleaning up getting ready to go home last night, and my co-worker comes to the back in a tizzy, saying I had to come with him. He brings me to a table of a family of four, (older children) and tells the man to repeat the statement. The man very pointedly states that to have baby chicks you dont have to have a rooster. I corrected it and he says, so there are three breeds! A hen a chicken and a rooster!? lol. City folk :)

Might want to put Raine in a small cage or container in there first, so they can get used to one another. I've seen feather dusters used to help comfort small hatches and singletons, perhaps that would help? So sorry you lost Stormy, these little monsters are kinda like sheep that way. :( 'A bag of bones and wool looking for a way to die.' is how sheep were once described, and I swear Serama chicks are just outright inventive that way. :(

Hugs and hang in there.

I'm so sorry to hear about Stormy! How heart breaking!

I would bet that free ranging with other.chickens is really dependent on the individual bird. Taco would fight to the death with every larger bird he encounters, especially roos, but I've had to pull him, bloody, out of a free fights with various hens.

Gosh, I missed a lot, been working on the house. RE: roosters crowing: When people ask about what they can do, and talk about things they've heard about, even if it is cruel, it's always good that they're asking here so they learn. This should always be a place where people can ask any question :)

We all have this problem in the city. I'm allowed to have roosters, but my neighbor doesn't like the noise. Now I keep them in the house as there is nothing else I can do. It's funny, but my family doesn't seem to mind too much. The kids have gotten used to it, and we all love our boys. I do plan on making a mechanically ventilated coop (drawing air from under the house where it's much cooler) in our patio, so that I don't have to deal with diapers every day. And their feathers around the diapers do get dirty, so it's not fun. They stay in a box at night without the diapers, and so far no skin conditions, but it's not natural and I worry it can become a problem.

It's sad because the boys can be the sweetest birds! My Crevecoeur boy is the biggest hugger ever, I love to snuggle with him! And he smells so good....anybody else love the smell of chickens? They're so clean smelling?? Or am I crazy,

Anyway, my girls have been laying, and I was trying to see if I could make them go broody, so I left the eggs in the nest. the eggs were multiplying, then I kinda got lazy, and just left them there. 18 eggs later, I decided to fire up the old incubator (home made) and was going to stick them inside when I noticed Luna was sitting on them several hours already. I went to bed, and this morning she was still on them. Eventually, she got up to eat and drink and Hermione took over, she's sitting on them right now for a few hours! Can they share the nest? I took some of the eggs and put them into the incubator, there were too many for them to keep warm, and I worry there still are. I think I left 8 of them. Hope they don't abandon 'em??!!!

My silkies will share. I don't see why seramas are any different.
