Cluck - Cluck! thank G-d you posted those pictures! because of you! i think i just found a new way to sex day old serama chicks! i noticed in you pictures that both you chicks are cocks. well i noticed that the the day old chicks wattles are reddish! well when i went to my chicks, i saw that i might be able to sex them at a day old! Watch this!

this is Tigger, who i clearly a pullet because she has no lines 4/8 chicks did not have these lines!

Hummmmmmmmmmm, must see what my current babies look like! I would assume that the boys would at least have darker red wattles then (since they're 1 1/2 weeks old. Then I'll see how the method compares when they're 3+ weeks old and their combs start to turn Thanks for posting that observation!

I certainly hope that you are wrong on this, because then I'd have to guess I have 4 females and 8 males!

I've gotta say, though, that they all kind of looked alike to me. They all had more down in the face, and the ones I called boys had no color, just a part in the down where the wattles were that might be a little larger or deeper than the 4 I dubbed girls I erred on the side of caution. It may not be right at all after they've grown out a bit. Too bad you didn't figure this out sooner! LOL

Well, I'm going to try this on my next batch of chicks due to hatch in a week or so (under a broody) If it works for these chicks, it might work for those, which would be amazing! Because other than Vent Sexing, there is no way to know these (Crevecoeur) chicks are boys or girls until they're around 14 weeks old!

I'll try both methods and report back (If I catch them hatched in time for vent sexing)

I found a picture of a polish chick as an example of a crest. When I looked at the front view of the Serama chick, it was crestless.
